Doctor Thorne scanned the El Aurian lying on the bio bed. “Well, apart from a touch of arthritis, I’d say you’re alright, Tora!”
Tora Kerven looked at him and rolled his eyes. “Arthritis? I only wish that was what was wrong with me, Doctor.”
Tom turned off his tricorder. “I’d recommend seeing a counsellor but the only one aboard is lying on one of my beds!”
There was a brief moment of silence as Tom looked at Tora curiously.
“How..”
Tom began but Tora raised his skeletal hand that silenced the words in his throat. “Please. Don’t ask how old I am. I have been giving the same answer for almost 500 years.”
Tom grinned. “I know how old you are, remember? It was one of the first things I determined when you came aboard during your physical. No, what I wanted to ask was this; how did you get yourself into such a state last night? I didn’t know El Aurians could get drunk. Granted, we don’t know too much about your people.”
Tora smiled up at Tom kindly. “We are much like you in appearance but our minds work very differently. We are able to be intoxicated….if we so wish to be. Last night, I wished to be.”
Tom shook his head. “Also the fact you have that curious purple mark on your right buttock, it’s not a birthmark...is it?”
Tora looked at him deadpan. “No, it isn’t.”
“Then what is it?” Tom asked curiously.
“A love bite from my first girlfriend, actually.”
Tom’s eyes widened and his jaw dropped open. “Are you serious?”
Tora nodded. “As serious as the universe is about keeping us on our toes.”
Tom narrowed his eyes, thinking logically. “Assuming that you had your first girlfriend as a teenager, and you are now well over the age of retirement, that ‘love bite’ as you describe it should be long gone.”
Tora clasped his hands together, a somber look on his face.
“First love, Doctor. It leaves its indelible mark on us all.”
