USS Renown on Patrol, Mizar Sector, 2405.
Captain MacFarlane looked around the bridge of the Renown. His first command. This whole ship was his to do with as he pleased. Within reason and, of course, with Starfleet Command’s approval.
Since becoming Captain, James had the full respect of the crew since he had been the first officer and since he’d moved up, Lieutenant Commander Winedark was now his first officer. Jack was formerly the Renown’s tactical officer and he was just the man that James needed as his Number One.
Winedark exited the Turbolift and smiled at James as he sat in the right hand chair and pulled up the ship’s status report.
“Everything is ship shape, Captain!” Winedark said in his ever present Scottish accent. “Cleared to proceed.”
MacFarlane nodded. “Mister Bevan, keep an eye on those scanners. If a Klingon ship does decide to take us by surprise, I want to surprise them first.”
Bevan smiled from his position behind the Captain at Tactical. “Aye sir, I have weapons and shields on standby. Dare I say it, but Commander Winedark’s improved shields may well protect us from a fleet of Negh’Var ships!”
Jack looked at Bevan and narrowed his eyes. “Now Bevan, nae brown nosing, ye hear?” He smirked at James who glanced to Jack and shook his head. The ops console beeped and Kodor, the Benzite at Science turned around. “Captain, I’m picking up a spatial disturbance at 423 mark 6.”
Right then, the whole bridge crew tensed up. James felt it. It was like someone pulling a rope really taught.
Bevan’s finger hovered over the shield control button. “Shields Captain?” He said, a little loudly. James shook his head. “Not yet, Mister Bevan. Xon, what kind of disturbance, is it a ship decloaking?”
Xon shook his head. “Negative. It’s some sort of anomaly. I can’t get a good read on it at this range.”
Jack looked at James. “Shall we take a look? Could be a Klingon trap, then again…”
James looked over at Jack and smiled. “Then again, it may not. No, this isn’t the Klingons style…”
James took a moment to consider the decision. He knew deviating from patrol would annoy Admiral Quinn but everything James did annoyed him so what was one more thing? James looked up and nodded."We’ll investigate. Helm move us within maximum scanning range…” He said.
Bevan frowned a little at this. “Captain, I strongly recommend that we raise the shields!” He said, a little excitedly. James turned around and looked at Bevan.
“Lieutenant, are you picking up any ships in the area?” James calmly said and Bevan shook his head as he looked at the scanner. “Nothing, sir. Nothing but the anomaly…”
James smiled at Bevan. "We're explorers Bevan, that doesn't change because the Klingons fancy having a pop at us!"
Bevan resisted replying to that. He was a man of action. MacFarlane had the respect of the crew but not him...yet. Bevan had transferred to the Renown from the Enterprise three months previously. He considered it a step down in his career. So far, the Renown had outwitted the Klingons who'd 'had a pop' and that had not impressed Bevan. Bevan hated Klingons and he wanted to kill every last one of them and so far, he hadn't killed one.
Xon turned around. “We are at maximum scanning range, Captain.”
James turned back and nodded to Xon. “Begin a full scan, I want to know what that is. If it’s a temporal anomaly, a subspace anomaly or something that’s being artificially generated by a deflector array.”
Xon nodded and tapped his console. After a few moments he shook his head. “Captain…all I can read is that it’s there…I can’t get any other sort of reading.”
Now it was James’ turn to frown. “No reading on it except that it’s a disturbance?” Xon nodded. “I recommend we move in closer, Captain.”
Jack perked a brow to James. “It’s just tempting us, aye?” James sighed. “Yellow Alert, shields up. Helm, move us to within minimum scanning distance…”
The Renown moved closer. Just as it was getting to the minimum scanning distance, Bevan’s console beeped.
“Captain! Three Klingon ships decloaking dead ahead!” Bevan cried.
James sat up. “Red Alert! Battlestations! Shields and Weapons to full!”
He barely got the sentence out before the ship rocked with the force of the three ships weapons firing. The Bridge lights flickered and James was nearly thrown out of his chair.
“Shields at 50 percent!” Bevan cried as a console sparked behind him. James shouted to the helm. “Evasive maneuvers, pattern MacFarlane Theta Four! Lieutenant Bevan, target the lead ship and return fire!”
Winedark jumped up and ran to the tactical station. “How are they punching through our shields like that?!” He cried as the ship rocked again and Bevan cried again as he watched the Shields drop to zero percent.
“Shields down! Picking up transport signatures on all decks!” Bevan grabbed a phaser from under his console and readied himself. "Finally! Come on ya Klingon bastards!" He snarled.
James jumped up. “Belay that talk Bevan! Keep your damn cool man!" He looked at Bevan and then turned to the rest of the bridge. "Arm yourselves! Security! Fend off all boarding parties!” James turned just in time to see a group of Klingons transport on and instantly attack the Bridge crew. He dived for his phaser and narrowly avoided a disruptor beam. James fired back but there was too many on the bridge at once!
James watched most of his bridge crew fall as he fought against the waves of Klingons. Just as they finished of the first wave, another transported in. James knew they had to retreat and leave the Bridge, Winedark was with him. As the doors closed he turned to Jack and Jack shook his head.
“What in hell’s teeth are they?! Troop transports?!” James said as he looked at his phaser and noticed the charge was almost out.
“Fuckin’ beats me Mac! They just keep on comin!” Jack said through gritted teeth. James ignored his outburst, he was used to seeing Jack like this in the heat of battle. “My phaser’s almost oot. How’s yours?”
James nodded. “Mine too.” He slapped his commbadge. “MacFarlane to Engineering, Status Report.”
There was no response. Jack tried his. He looked at James.
“Oh my god…” Jack breathed. “Dinnae tell me…”
James nodded and tapped his badge twice. “This is the Captain to all surviving hands. Abandon ship! I repeat, all surviving hands Abandon ship!”
