Vilaina sat at her desk in her ready room. Her ears hung a little. Commander Talas, her XO for the Providence knew that signal, she saw it every time Vilaina had performed the 'funeral-at-sea'. That's what had prompted the commander to barge in. The two had been working together for years, and they'd become friends. Talas was the first to speak.
"Admiral...you have the funeral look to you, and we've already done the funeral for Reaper Squadron, what the hell is bothering you?"
Vilaina looked up, "Talas, don't chase this one..."
"No way, Ma'am, been your friend for too many damn years. Remember what I said to you on the Iroquois?" The Andorian looked determined.
Vilaina sighed, "...That if I ended up in the brig for something crazy, you'd be right there next to me saying: 'That was fun, hope they do replays for the court marshal.'"
Talas grinned, "Exactly. Which is why, I'm in here, asking you what's bugging you."
Vilaina shook her head, "This one's going to be mine to carry, Talas."
"Off the record then, one friend to another?"
Vilaina sighed and looked up, "Computer, disable audio and visual recording in this room, authorization Vilaina-three-seven-zero-Gamma."
The computer chirped, "Audio and visual recording disabled."
Vilaina took her commbadge off and placed it on her desk as Talas did the same. Talas gave her a look, indicating for her to spill it.
Vilaina took a long moment to think, "Talas, you are never to repeat what I'm about to tell you. If you do, I'm coming after you with a vengeance, got it?"
Talas shrugged, "What, it's not like you're invoking Article 14, Section 31."
Vilaina's look made Talas cringe, "Talas..."
The Andorian recovered, "Okay, maybe you are, Vil. What made you step over the line?" She sat down in the chair across from Vilaina.
"The Pact. I'm sure you heard about the attempted bombing of the Dominion War Memorial?"
"Yeah, and how the Avalon foiled it...but if they hadn't..."
"The Federation President, Klingon Chancellor, and who knows how many others would have been killed..."
Talas sighed, "So what are you doing?"
Vilaina looked Talas in the eye, "Something that's covered by Article 14, Section 31 in my opinion. And I have to live with it."
"Vil...I hope you thought hard about this thing."
"I did..."
"Tell anyone else?"
"Only a handful of people know what's going to happen."
"Why don't you stop it and find another option?"
Vilaina gave a helpless smile, "Because the wheels are already turning...and we passed the point of no return."
"Vil...you're insistent on falling alone for this one if someone has to fall, aren't you?"
"Yeah...if it goes up in my face it's on me. You won't be asking for replays at the court marshal if there is one."
"...Yeah..." Talas sighed and picked up her commbadge, "I should get back to it, Thunderhawk is still getting settled in..."
Vilaina nodded and put her commbadge back on as Talas walked out. The Admiral stared out the window, thinking to herself.
