"You'd think that we could handle this on the ship," grumbled Commander James Davis as he and Captain Cameron Wander walked to a conference room on Deep Space Nine. "I mean come on, it'd be more secure."
"Commander, it is not our position to question the orders of our superiors when it comes to reporting instructions. You would be good to remember that," admonished Wander.
"Aye, sir." They walked into the conference room, whose only occupant was a man wearing the rank of Rear Admiral (Lower) and came to attention before him.
Wander spoke. "Sir, Captain Wander and Commander Davis reporting as ordered"
The Admiral looked up from his PADD. "At ease gentlemen, and thank you for coming. I'm Admiral Schiller, Starfleet Intelligence. Have a seat gentlemen." As Wander and Davis took their chairs, Admiral Shiller went on. "You two have done phenomenal work on this last assignment. Three years behind enemy lines using an experimental ship the size of an overgrown shuttle with no support from the outside. Very few crews have ever done anything like that. The intelligence your ship provided us was put to very good use. That said, the Langley is now considered obsolete. I'm rescinding the refit orders for her."
"What?!" Davis exclaimed. "You can't do that! She's-" He broke off with a look from Wander.
"Look, I can understand Commander why you're upset. But we now have vessels specifically designed for the work Langley has been doing. Frankly, it's not worth the effort to bring her up to speed. We're mothballing her until she has a need. Now, with that said, you two need assignments. Right now we don't have a command open, but with your experiences you two are far too valuable to just sit around. The 146th Fleet has requested assistance in upcoming operations, so as of now both of you are temporarily attached to the 146th in whatever roll they need. Odds are you'll be assigned to their N-2 shop and help out with intelligence, but that's up to the command. Now both of you have served with the 146th, so there shouldn't be an issue integrating with the outfit. When your TDY is complete, both of you will be offered choice of posting, within reason. Any questions?"
"Yes, sir," Wander said, "What about the rest of the crew of the Langley?"
"After debriefing, everyone is being reassigned depending on personal preferences, specialties, and needs of the Fleet. Don't worry Captain, your crew is being looked after. Anything else?"
After a brief look at Davis, Wander said "No , sir."
Schiller nodded. "Very well gentlemen, that's all. Report in to the 146th at your earliest convenience. Good luck to you both. Dismissed."
Both officers stood and left. After the door shut behind them, Davis looked to Wander. "I can't believe they're shutting us down like this."
"I would hardly characterize it as being 'shut down', Commander. We are simply following the natural progression of Starfleet."
Davis shook his head. "I swear sir, if I didn't know any better I'd say you're a Vulcan in disguise. So now what?"
"We back our belongs and report to the 146th's Personnel office. I would suggest being ready to report within three hours. Now if you'll excuse me Commander, I need to pack."
"Aye, sir." Davis extended his hand to Wander. "Sir, it's been a pain in the ass, but it's been good to serve with you."
Wander smiled slightly at that, an expression he infrequently used. "Indeed, Commander. Indeed."
