USS Gettysburg (NCC-1214-B) is a double hull, twin nacelle starship of the United Federation of Planets Starfleet. She is the third starship to bear the name, a Sovereign-class cruiser, and is currently in active commission. Commissioned in 2384, the ship has seen service in the Klingon, Cardassian and Iconian conflicts of the early 25th century, and throughout her 32 year service has completed both close support missions with the United Federation of Planets Home Fleet and humanitarian relief and rebuilding efforts with Starfleet's 15th Fleet based out of Starbase 39-Sierra.
In continuous service apart from standard refit cycles, the ship was assigned to 146th in 2416, under Captain Arentalleh sh’Vevoth, formerly of the U.S.S. Wilson, and her senior staff, following her promotion to the rank of Captain.
USS Gettysburg is named for the city of Gettysburg, Washington, United States Navy Protected Cruiser that served during World War One as a patrol ship, and a United States Navy attack Submarine of the Los Angeles Class.
Ship Service History
Stardate 60883.19 (April 2383): Naval Construction Contract 1214-B authorized by Starfleet Command, Sovereign Class. Provisionally named U.S.S. Gettysburg, the name is confirmed a fortnight later.
Stardate 63420.06 (October 2385): Naval Construction Contract 1214-B launched from Utopia Planitia, drydock 17, construction facility 2 under the command of Commander Keith Bradbury, for ferry to San Francisco Fleet Yards for outfitting and final crew rotation. Captain T’Veln transports aboard, Stardate 63436.5, to assume command of USS Gettysburg, with Commander Bradbury assuming the position of Executive Officer.
Stardate 63551.71 - 64050.21 (December 2385 - June 2386): USS Gettysburg runs a 7 month long shakedown cruise of the Beta Quadrant, including brief visits to Vulcan, Andoria and Tellar Prime. Included in the shakedown is a memorial visit to Wolf 359, in honor of the 19th Anniversary of the battle.
Stardate 62430.8 (June 2385): USS Gettysburg is diverted to Starbase 157, following fears of Klingon aggression following the deployment of Enterprise and Rodney to the area to assist in the removal of Federation citizens from Khitomer.
USS Gettysburg is involved, during it’s 6 month stay at Starbase 157, in the creation and support of several Reman colonies, providing escort and humanitarian relief, leading to several minor armed engagements with Klingon Forces. In order to attempt to limit armed engagement, Gettysburg is ordered to return to Deep Space Nine in preparation of the Federation-Cardassian treaty being ratified.
Stardate 63041.8 (January 2386):. USS Gettysburg, assigned to Deep Space Nine, is one of several starship’s present when the USS Rodney returns to port, after having reported the destruction of a rogue Galor Class destroyer. Moving away from the station, Gettysburg forms the picket against any attacks by rogue Cardassian vessels. A week later, Starfleet Intelligence puts a name to the rogue vessels: The True Way. Gettysburg begins operations to counter their movement in the area around Deep Space Nine and the Badlands.
Stardate 64444.5 (June 2387): The Hobus Supernova. Starfleet sends a message to its fastest starships, including Gettysburg, asking for a mission update and an estimated time of arrival, if they departed for Romulus at maximum warp. Gettysburg is well within range at maximum warp, and makes best speed to Starbase 39-Sierra, leading humanitarian efforts in the area, including fighting off a Tal’Shiar attack on a medical convoy, destroying a Mogai Class warbird with the assistance of the USS Ghandi and the USS Lancaster.
Stardate 64880.1 (November 2387): Gettysburg completes several months of search, rescue and recovery work in Romulan space, and is dispatched to the Hobus system to determine whether the supernova caused damage to local subspace. The ship completes a three-week survey of the dead star, cataloguing subspace turbulence and the effects it has on warp field stability in the region. Results are forwarded to the Daystrom Institute.
Stardate 65172.8 (March 2388): Gettysburg, along with several other vessels, are sent to escort a diplomatic convoy to Qu’Nos, in an attempt to get the Klingon Empire to assist with rescue and humanitarian efforts in Romulan Space. Following the Klingon refusal, Gettysburg is involved in a brief skirmish with an Empire Vor’Cha. No shots are fired, and both ships never raise their shields. The incident is still reported to Starfleet Command, who increase border patrols along the Neutral Zone.
Stardate 66321.3 (April 2389): Gettysburg is one of 15 ships dispatched to the Romulan colony of Khitomer, which has been under near constant siege by Klingon Forces since the capture of Archanis. Gettysburg fires on two K’Vort-class cruisers while the convoy beams down food, medicine, blankets and several MACO teams, tasked to train the Romulan’s in guerilla tactics, and transmit intelligence back to K-7 Command.
Stardate 69465.2 (June 2392): Gettysburg is ordered to pull back from the Romulan-Klingon Border and report to Starbase 157, where she would begin convoy protection operations. Captain T'Veln sends back a message of non-compliance - “Respectfully, it is illogical to retreat when our mission is not complete” - and continues to assist and defend Romulan colonies until the USS Maxwell is sent to ‘escort’ the ship back to 234. Captain T’Veln faces a tribunal aboard Starbase 234, but due to her actions in saving two colonies is stripped of her time in rank and placed at the bottom of all promotion lists. She does, however, retain her command.
Stardate 69631.9 (August 2392): Gettysburg, due to her previous actions defending Romulan and Gorn colonies against Klingon Aggression is ordered to make best speed to Starbase 157, where Starfleet were attempting to mediate a peace accord between the Klingon, Gorn and Romulan peoples. However, following an explosion, subsequently discovered to be a bomb, the peace talks break down, and Gettysburg returns to Deep Space K-7.
Stardate 73631.5 (August 2396): Gettysburg receives classified orders to pursue and apprehend the U.S.S. Michigan by any means necessary, which is believed to have been a victim of hijacking by elements of the Orion Syndicate. Captain T’Veln issues a ‘Heave To’ to Captain Lymis, the acknowledged leader of the pirates aboard the Michigan, which is ignored. Not wanting to fire on a Federation ship, Captain Bradbury utilizes the prefix code to drop Michigan’s shields, before Lieutenant Davidson beams Michigan’s primary impulse reactor into space.
Soon after, an unaffliated Klingon vessel' drops out of warp briefly, before transporting the Orion personnel off the Michigan, before warping out again. Gettysburg escorts Michigan to K-7, before returning to a standard patrol.
Stardate 83177.5 (March 2406): Gettysburg returns to Earth for the launch of the Stargazer-A, going so far as to fire a spread of torpedo’s to detonate in a form of fireworks as the other ship slips her moorings from San Francisco Fleet Yards. Following the firing of torpedoes, T’Veln is given a verbal reprimand by SanFran traffic control, but no further action was taken. Gettysburg accompanies Stargazer to Andoria, before breaking off and transferring to Starbase 39-Sierra.
Stardate 86763.9 (October 2409): Gettysburg is present when the fledgling Romulan Republic settles upon Dewa Three, naming the planet Mol’Rihan, or ‘New Romulus’. Gettysburg remains on station for several months, assisting in the creation of infrastructure on the planet’s surface, and engages an unknown, but later discovered to be Elachi invasion attempt with elements of Starfleet, the republic and the Klingon Empire.
Stardate 94555.5 (December 2416): Gettysburg is ordered to Starbase 146, via Starbase 24, to transfer command of the vessel to newly promoted Captain Arentalleh Sh'Vevoth. Captain T’Veln and her senior staff are slated to assume command of USS Abraxes, Archon Class.
Armaments
16x MK XII phaser arrays
6x MK XII Micro phaser turret (2 ventral saucer, 2 dorsal saucer, 2 ventral engineering hull)
1x turreted MK XII burst-fire dual quantum torpedo launcher (ventral, fore)
6x Mk XII burst-fire photon torpedo launchers (2 aft, 4 fore)
”…USS Gettysburg has been extensively modified from her original San Francisco yard fitting in 2384. Having been refit five times in her 33 years of service, few of the ship’s original systems remain onboard, with perhaps only ornamental furnishings being original components. Mk XII phasers were first installed on the ship in 2410 and have been progressively up-rated through a series of EPS grid reinforcements, beam modulators, and most recently, feedback buffers which bleed excess directed-energy output into the shield grid. Gettysburg, scoring average for her class on beam accuracy during acceptance trials in 2414, didn’t rate as high as some of her sister vessels, which was put down to diffusion between the focusing lens and the emitters. An investigation found while diffusion was present, it was within class limits.
Beam modulation technology provided by the Romulan Republic to Starfleet Engineers in 2409 was installed in Gettysburg's tactical suite early in 2411, and pushes the nadion beam out of its normal cohesion frequency into a higher or lower range as required, at variable power outputs. Shield penetration is improved by 9% and weapons have marginally better performance against ablative armours.
Torpedo armaments are average for a later Sovereign-class vessel. Upgrades were carried out on the quantum torpedo turret and main aft battery. Forward torpedo coverage was improved through the installation of wide-angle targeting systems (as found on newer Regent-class ships) in 2410. Induction coil improvements and the incorporation of warhead particle stabilizers in the ship’s photon torpedo tubes further allows for the use of non-standard gravimetric devices and other higher-yield warheads."
Defensive Systems:
Mk XII Adaptive Resilient Deflector Shields - fitted at Starbase 24
MK XII Enhanced Neutronium hull plating w/ RCS power transfer auxiliaries
”From commissioning in 2384, USS Gettysburg's primary deflector shield grid was a regenerative array comprising 28 field generators with reactive distortion fields located at frames 5, 12, 18 and 26. This configuration was standard across Sovereign class hulls until 2400 with the introduction of Aegis covariant shield patterns. Aegis defensive systems were installed on the USS Gettysburg during her 20 year refit in 2406, which saw the high-capacity, low-regenerative fields replaced by sturdier resilient arrays in response to improvements in disruptor technology observed within the Klingon Empire. While lower in overall power ratings, Gettysburg's shield grid – then a standard Starfleet Mk XII resilient shield with specific modifications to made to energy capacitors - put it on-par with the longevity of most covariant patterns. In practice, the ship’s tactical performance saw an improvement as the apparent effectiveness of weapons fire was noticeably degraded by hardened shield grids.
These resilient shield systems were retained in her most recent 2413 refit, although complete replacements of the emitter array components mean that they can be tuned for specific energy resistances depending on the tactical situation. Combined with earlier-mentioned feedback buffers, installed following the success of similar buffers on the Ramillies, overall shield performance is currently assessed as being 50 percent more efficient than Aegis systems.
Armour plating has been present on the ship since construction, and has been progressively improved over time. Mk XII neutronium plating was installed to replace older Mk XI ablative systems in 2413, and they are combined with energy capacitors running along the inner hull which divert excess energy to the ship’s RCS thrusters, improving combat manoeuvrability by approximately 20 percent. A proposal to improve armour coverage during this refit was rejected due to the considerable impact it was judged to have on other areas of system performance.”
Propulsion:
Mk XII Field Stabilized Warp Core with integrated transwarp coil feeding two Nars-Silbur 1,800 cochrane nacelles:
Standard cruise velocity: Warp 9.97 (sustained)
Maximum speed: Transwarp 13.98 (sustainable for 12 hours)
Quantum Slipstream Drive (Classified)
”…Nothing of Gettysburg's original warp drive remains part of the ship’s systems. New nacelles were installed in 2406, incorporating quantum slipstream inducers in to the warp coils and they were further upgraded in 2409 with the introduction of integrated transwarp field coils. The Sovereign-class’s traditionally very high cruise velocities were unaffected by these modifications, and her maximum, unsustainable velocity was improved to Warp 12.64. Due to the complexity of the ship’s design, many of the ship’s engineering systems have been overhauled in a series of staged refits all of which were generally carried out to support secondary systems improvements as power requirements changed and new technologies were adapted. The installation of a new field-stabilizing matter/antimatter warp core was the most recent improvement to the ship’s engineering systems in 2414, improving power efficiency and distribution between systems, and better managing the ship’s warp field. Despite these improvements, the lack of uniform design between the various sub-systems of Gettysburg's engineering sections means that maintenance demands are considerably higher than typically expected for current Starfleet designs. While this is a reflection of the ship’s and it’s sisters age, the systems are nonetheless robust.”
