Service History:
USS Avalon is one of the first Odyssey-class starships ordered by Starfleet Command and the first of the Tactical Cruiser subtype, succeeding the Galaxy-class USS Avalon that had served with distinction during the Dominion War before being retired in 2409. Construction began in 2406 at the Utopia Planitia Shipyards in orbit of Mars under the supervision of Commander Lourdes Quinteros. The final phase of the Avalon's construction was hastened thanks to the capture of Deep Space 9 by temporally displaced Dominion forces in early 2411. Assigned to the Beta Ursae Defense Force, command of the Avalon was awarded to Captain Jason Hunter, formerly the commanding officer of the starship Midway. Pressed into serving as the flagship for the effort to retake DS9 with minimal shakedown time, the Avalon's warp drive failed to engage while the rest of the fleet headed into battle against the Jem'Hadar occupation forces. With the flaw corrected, the Avalon joined the fray and successfully freed the station.
Following a successful shakedown cruise, the Avalon officially went on active duty on a diplomatic mission to Cardassia Prime to repair relations strained after the Federation returned the leader of the Founders to the Dominion. Months later, the Avalon defended Deep Space 9 against the forces of General Tomalar, a member of the Romulan Tal Shiar who had allegedly gone rogue. In July of 2411, the Beta Ursae Defense Force was reorganized into the 146th Auxiliary Fleet. The 146th retained the Avalon as its flagship and her home port moved from Deep Space 9 to Starbase 146 in the Beta Ursae Sector Block. After attempting to intercede in a civil uprising on Jarkonis II, Jason Hunter was relieved of command of the Avalon in mid-2411 and replaced by Captain John Sanders, formerly commanding officer of the USS Hydra. Sanders had been on the initial list of candidates to captain the Avalon, however his extensive war record against the Klingon Empire was deemed problematic due to the need for KDF assistance in retaking Deep Space 9. The start of Captain Sanders' tenure on the Avalon was highlighted by a Borg attack on Starbase 146, the rescue of Romulan refugees in the Hyralan Sector, and the recovery of the computer core of the wrecked starship Emissary.
In late 2411, the Avalon investigated the disappearance of a Federation colony in the Rolor Nebula. In orbit, she found a Borg cube that had been separated from the collective for thirty years. Captain Sanders was abducted from the Avalon's bridge but was rescued by First Officer Gathis Edwards, who appeared to have lost his life during the away mission. Science Officer Seventeen of Twenty-Five was promoted and became the Avalon's first officer in his place. As the year 2411 drew to a close, the Avalon and ships of the 146th Fleet were assigned to New Romulus, capital of the Romulan Republic, to assist in constructing the Federation embassy and to provide logistical aid. Upon being relieved by the starship Tiberius, the Avalon returned to Starbase 146 after several weeks. The Avalon was then drawn into a conflict between the Klingon Empire and the disgraced House of Qu'Vat, serving in a rare joint Starfleet and KDF task force against the Qu'Vat family at the beginning of 2412.
Following the victory over the House of Qu'Vat, the Avalon led the search for the destroyer Kusanagi, flagship of famed Admiral Kiso Hsalo. The Kusanagi had fallen into a parallel dimension and was besieged by entities native to that realm. Soon thereafter, the Avalon was assigned to a mission of long-range exploration past the Afehirr Nebula. The mission was cut short as the Avalon was embroiled in dealing with General Solius, the lord regent of the Romulan Star Empire who intended to attack New Romulus. Temporarily promoted to the rank of admiral, John Sanders led the Avalon and the 146th in a showdown with Solius' forces at Starbase 234. Prior to the battle, the Avalon broadcasted evidence of Solius' intentions, which caused many Imperial Star Navy Vessels to turn on the lord regent and defect to the Romulan Republic. Solius himself escaped, however.
In mid 2412, the Avalon found herself embroiled in a massive conspiracy with her former captain caught in the middle. The Tal Shiar had abducted Hunter, by then captain of the USS California, from the surface of Nimbus III. The Romulan Empire, represented by Senator Chavek ir'Rator tr'Valdran, claimed Hunter was arrested for his role in the battle against General Tomalar a year earlier. In exchange for Hunter's return, Chavek wanted Tomalar. After months of backroom politics and diplomacy, with the permission of Starfleet Command and the Federation Council, the Avalon led a task force to thwart Senator Chavek's trade with renegade Starfleet Admiral Andrew Blake, a former rival of Captain Sanders. Jason Hunter was recovered alive, but Chavek executed Tomalar before being taken into custody. Blake sacrificed his life to destroy a Borg unimatrix vessel summoned using Tal Shiar technology. Senator Chavek later committed suicide while in custody on Starbase 146.
At the end of October 2412, Captain Sanders was summoned to New Romulus to participate in the trial run of the Iconian gateway discovered in a subterranean complex the year prior, along with the captains of the Enterprise-F, Bortasqu', and Ambassador Worf. A malfunction resulted in massive seismic activity on New Romulus and forced the delegates to the demonstration to jump through the gateway before the underground chamber collapsed on them. To effect an escape, they reactivated the rest of the gateway network to return to the Jouret System in the Tau Dewa Sector Block, which saved New Romulus. Leading a task force of Federation vessels from the 146th Fleet, the Avalon crossed through the gateway weeks later into the Solanae Dyson Sphere, immediately running afoul of the Voth species. During her time in the Sphere, the Avalon secured a Spire for use by the 146th and their allies and rescued a Voth defector. In mid-December of 2412, the Avalon was ambushed by a Voth fleet and severely damaged. The ship was forced to leave the Sphere and undergo three weeks of repairs and upgrades at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in orbit of Mars.
Shortly after the Avalon's return to service in early 2413, the Avalon became embroiled in the machinations of an organization called the Pact, an association of various fringe threat forces organized by an individual (or individuals) called the Marshal. The ship's investigations to the Avalon and her crew all over local space, including the home planet of the Garidians. The Pact's plan culminated in an attempted attack on Bajor against ceremonies commemorating the Dominion War, though this assassination attempt was thwarted by the Avalon's crew and later resulted in the capture of former Pact member Solius. The Avalon then assisted Klingon forces in repelling Pact forces under the command of Breen Thot Pran and assisted the 146th Fleet in ending a blockade of Jarkonis II by renegade Klingon warlord Merzan. Following the defeats handed to the Pact and Merzan, Starfleet Command assigned the Avalon to a mission of exploration in the Zenas Expanse. In late March of 2413, tragedy struck when former Avalon officer Itachi Rin was murdered by a Hirogen. This tragedy was further compounded by the attack upon the mercenary Karis Xereth that drove her employer Sindari Krowlek to insanity, nearly resulting in the Avalon leading the 146th in an action against Krowlek's flagship, the Scarlet Sinner, at the fleet's headquarters.
Two months after Solius' arrest, he finally revealed the truth about the Marshal; the leader of the Pact was in fact an Undine who used its shape-shifting abilities to convince the various members of the Pact to join together and ultimately further Undine plans for a general invasion of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. On the eve of the Pact and Undine's planned offensive in April of 2413 and on the eve of Admiral Tuvok's summit to deal with the Jenolan Sphere and the Undine threat, the Avalon led a task force from the 146th back to the Solanae Dyson Sphere. However, due to an Undine attack, the Avalon and her task force joined Federation, Klingon, and Romulan Republic forces in saving Qo'noS from destruction. These actions resulted in the end of the war between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, a war the Avalon's design was influenced by and whose battles shaped her captain's career prior to taking command.
In mid-2413, the Avalon once again crossed paths with S'harien S'Terlaya, culminating in an attack on a peace conference at Risa. Charged with pursuing S'harien lest he strike again, the Avalon and her crew located his bastard son, Maec, and his mother Kleta. However, S'harien surprised the ship and an away team sent to recover the pair from an abandoned Cardassian mine. Maec, Captain Sanders, Chief of Security Thane Va'rek, and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Adriana Whitlock were captured and Kleta murdered in cold blood. S'harien detonated an Omega device and escaped. In temporary command, Seventeen of Twenty-Five marshaled a combined strike force to stop S'harien while the away team effected an escape. S'harien fled to his hidden base complete with a functional Iconian gateway linked to an anti-Iconian weapon system located in the Delta Quadrant. S'harien, somehow imbued with the abilities of an Iconian, fended off multiple attacks from the away team and Starfleet and Illarian marine detachments and was only stopped by the arrival of an actual Iconian, eventually resulting in S'harien's death.
Following S'harien's demise, the Avalon investigated his facility in the Gamma Quadrant, however negotiations for safe passage to said planet with the Vorta Verauan were marred by an attack by the liberated Jem'Hadar forces under the command of the Terran Empire version of Dr. B'kehla Johnson. Johnson was ultimately defeated and captured along with the destruction of the anti-Iconian weapon, but not before Johnson's forces implanted a mysterious computer virus in both the Avalon's and Deep Space 9's computer systems.
