"Personally, I didn't think I'd be making one of these again so soon, but here goes... "End Adjutant's Log, begin Captain's Log, Stardate 88171.4: "Admiral Spoon, commanding officer of the Beta Ursae Defense Force, has officially installed me as captain of the U.S.S. Avalon. She's a fine ship, one of the best Starfleet has ever commissioned, but even a vessel like the Avalon is nothing without a good crew, which she just happens to be short on at the moment. "Unfortunately, my former crew from the Midway have moved on, either promoted to different positions or assigned to areas of operations too remote to get them back to the Avalon in time. In essence, I'm starting over from scratch again. It's not an easy task: the crew needs to be able to count on each other as much as I need to count on them. I'll be spending the next week or so getting the Avalon's crew installed, then we can focus on our first mission: getting Deep Space Nine back..."
"Captain's Personal Log: Supplemental "Arcen is dead. *long pause* "Captain Arcen Xivix, my best friend and a man whom I consider to be a brother is dead. He gave his life to destroy the entity that destroyed his homeworld, doomed his species to extinction. He succeeded at the cost of his own life... *another pause* "He was in constant telepathic contact with me right until the end. I felt him die, I felt him destroy that which destroyed his world. On the balance, that's probably the best way for a man like him to go out, doing something useful, destroying that which had killed billions. I'm certain a Klingon would consider that to be a glorious death... "And yet and I can't help but think of Arcen's sons, Sebastian and Jayden, how their lives will unfold without their father. As much as I disagree with my father, I know I wouldn't be where I am now if not for him. And I fear what my son's life will be like if I'm not there for him. If I can, I will tell them of the good that their father did, about how despite being so different in every sense, we were inseparable friends. He was like a brother to me and I shall miss him as such. "He may have been an alien, but he perhaps was one of the most human beings I have ever known..." *a quiet sob can be heard before the log ends*
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88188.9 "We've reached a turning point in the siege of Deep Space Nine. Tomorrow at 13:00 hours shipboard time, the Founder, guilty of mass murder against the Cardassian people, will attempt to convince the Dominion forces displaced in time to withdraw back to the Gamma Quadrant. If successful, we'll have retaken the station without further bloodshed. If she fails, then our only recourse is one of force. "If that happens, then the Avalon will serve as the flagship in the battle to come. The ship herself is ready; having spent the last six days getting myself acquainted with her, I can safely say she is the most advanced and most powerful starship every constructed. But the Avalon is only one ship and a ship missing critical senior staff such as a first officer and chief engineer. "Credit, though, belongs with second officer Commander Morliani Shan and Engineer's Mate Korin. They have filled in admirably for their eventual superiors and I believe both will one day be worthy of promotion to the posts they have so admirably demonstrated competence in. If not for them, the Avalon would not be remotely ready for the task at hand. "Avalon of course isn't the only ship being asked to take action against Loriss and Kar'ukan's forces if the use of force is required. The Tiberius, the Exodus, the Vindicated, the Ares; thousands are being asked to engage the enemy at DS9 if worse comes to worse along with our comrades in the Klingon Defense Force. Just as my father's generation was asked to stand tall against the Dominion, so too is the next generation. "Deep Space Nine represents much to many people. To the Federation and Starfleet, it's our most important space station along the Cardassian border and our first line of defense against aggression from the Gamma Quadrant. To both the Federation and the Klingon Empire, it represents a place where both our peoples can come together in mutual defense against the threat of the Borg, Undine, and Iconians. "But to me personally, it represents something more than that. Deep Space Nine was where Kalera and I became husband and wife, it was where our son Darren came into this world. Many other people, many of them my friends, feel the same personal attachment to that space station. Hromar Williams, a man I consider one of my closest friends, went from strategic operations officer to captain there; he met his fiance there. Admiral Xander Serat, a personal friend of my wife and many of our friends, is now a prisoner on that station. Taking back DS9 isn't just a matter of interstellar strategy or logistics; it is a personal imperative that we take back our home. "One way or another, we're getting Deep Space Nine back and anyone who should stand in our way should be pitied, for when someone is robbed of one's home, one can expect little in the way of mercy..."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88191.4 "Deep Space Nine has been freed. After the Founder's attempt to force Kar'ukan and his Jem'Hadar to abandon the station failed, a combined Federation and Klingon armada destroyed his flagship and many of his ship under his control. The remaining Jem'Hadar forces withdrew to the Gamma Quadrant along with the Founder, Loriss, and Eraun. Although DS9 is still heavily damaged, it is once again under Federation control. "Although the Avalon performed admirably during the battle, her debut was marred by two severe technical glitches. A freeze of the antimatter injector prevented the ship from entering warp and thus delaying our entry into the engagement. A sudden failure of the starboard shield generators left the Avalon vulnerable to attack and allowed Jem'Hadar boarding parties to beam over. "The Avalon did survive the battle with only minor damage on top of her technical difficulties, however the fleet fared worse. The Legacy along with many other ships were destroyed; the Tiberius has been reduced to a dead hulk. I fear that while my ship performed well in battle, her success has already bred contempt. The Avalon is the flagship of the Beta Ursae Defense Force and only the third ship of her class in operation. We're high profile, subject to both admiration and disdain. Myself and my crew are under heavy scrutiny and will have our supporters and detractors. We must be above either fame or infamy; we must do our jobs and let our deeds speak for ourselves. "In the meantime, we await our next assignment. While the current engineering staff performed yeoman's work in overcoming the Avalon's teething difficulties, I feel we need more support in making sure the ship functions at full readiness. In addition to a full time chief engineer, I intend to ask for assistance from Deep Space Nine's chief of operations Commander Puma and the Utopia Planitia Ship Yards that constructed the Avalon. What happened today must never happen again to my ship. Too many lives were likely lost because of it..."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88199.6 "The Avalon has just completed a successful shakedown cruise. Propulsion, defense systems, and sensors all check out. Let the record show that this vessel's status is now fully operational. Credit must be given to Chief Engineer Fearos and his staff, along with Lieutenant Commander Sophia Johansson for ironing out the last of the Avalon's technical difficulties. "In addition, we've finally received our first officer, Commander Gathis Edwards, formerly of the U.S.S. Everest. Many other members of the crew, including Commander Fearos, are from that vessel, having recently returned from being stranded in another galaxy. Their experiences will be an asset to the Avalon and I'm looking forward to Commander Edwards helping his former comrades into transitioning to their current situation. "With ship and crew now ready, I look forward to our next assignment..." "Captain's Personal Log: Supplemental "I really hope I didn't start a prank war with Hromar."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88216.3 "Today has seen a rather dramatic turn of events for both the Avalon and Deep Space Nine. A Klingon task force belonging to the House of Duras and operating under the direct orders of Chancellor J'mpok arrived demanding the extradition of General K'reb, formerly head of all Klingon forces assigned to the Beta Ursae Sector Block. From the information available, General K'reb has disappeared and his family has sought asylum on the station under the care of its captain, Hromar Williams. In the interim, it would appear that command of the KDF forces orbiting the station and beyond has fallen to General Karag. I must confess a lack of enthusiasm in that regard. "Meanwhile, the Avalon has its orders for her first official mission. The Cardassian Union has not taken our returning the female Founder to the Dominion in exchange for ending the siege at Deep Space Nine all that well. The Detapa Council has issued formal protests while officers of the Cardassian Civil Defense Force have taken it upon themselves to voice their displeasure by targeting Federation shipping. It is our task to meet with representatives of the Cardassian government in the hopes of smoothing over relations. Perhaps the mere fact that the Beta Ursae Defense Force's flagship is being sent in will prove to the Cardassians that the Federation takes this matter seriously..."
"Personal Log: Supplemental "I'm in love. "There's really no better way to describe that. I had thought that after the death of my wife and the end of my relationship with Dr. Pierce that there was no way I could ever feel this happy, but then Alana entered my life. I just...wow, I can't even put this into words. I'm crazy about her. She completes me. Lana not only fixed my broken heart, she's stolen it like a talented thief. "And yet...while I am insanely happy thanks to Lana, it seems Fate has conspired to dampen our budding love. Kiso, a man I consider to be a friend as well as a mentor, is hovering between life and death in the Avalon's sickbay. Hromar, a man I consider to be a brother, is going through a personal loss that no man should ever be forced to endure. "Thus I feel the need to keep my relationship with Lana restrained for now. I know that when things were looking at their worst for me that I only felt more miserable whenever people were openly affectionate around me. I should be humble and considerate, but...I love Alana to the point where I don't care if we're the subject of idle gossip or betting. She is the woman for me, hands down, bar none, and I'll be damned if anything stands in the way of us... "Oh, and an addendum. Investigate possible betting pools among the officers and crew. Can't afford to let something like that spiral out of control...""Captain's Log: Supplemental "Our mission to repair frayed diplomatic relations with the Cardassian Union has been a success. A member of the Detapa Council beamed aboard the Avalon and while she expressed disdain for the Federation's decision regarding the Founder, she was willing to forgive rather than forget, though I find myself wondering if that mentality is universal among her colleagues. The Cardassians made a show of expressing their displeasure over the release of the Founder in terms of the military assets they deployed. One can only hope that their ire, while understandable, is a temporary state. "At the very least, we now know who is behind the attacks on Federation shipping: House Arterius, a faction within the Cardassian Union that the Detapa Council has disavowed. They have even gone so far as to supply the Federation with locations of Arterius strongholds and have offered assistance in dealing with them. The information has been forwarded to BUDF headquarters on Deep Space Nine and to Starfleet Command. "Additionally, let the record show that I personally recommend Gunnery Sergeant Alana Summers to the position of assistant counselor. The Avalon has a crew of around 2,500 souls and I...we need someone like her on board. She has proven herself a real asset and I want her to remain here..." *He remains silent a moment* "...What I mean to say is that she...the gunny is a talented person and it'd be foolish to not have her...add her to the team..." *Another pause* "...Forget it. Computer, end log."
"Captain's Log: Supplemental "The voyage of the Excalibur under the control of the crew of the Tiberius was a successful one. Even though our escort sustained moderate damage in the mission against the Orions, she held her own and Captain Varal has nothing but praise for her. I initially offered the services of Excalibur to the crew of the Tiberius due to their nearly sacrificing their ship to defend the Avalon during the battle to liberate Deep Space Nine. I am pleased to see that this reciprocal favor has paid off so well. "Additionally, let the record now show that Gunnery Sergeant Alana Summers has been officially given the position of assistant counselor aboard the Avalon. I believe she will be an asset to the crew. *If one happened to be in the room with him when he made said assertion, one would see that he did so with a straight face although with a dopey, love-struck schoolboy expression soon after, too*
"Captain's Personal Log: Stardate 88232.6 "Alana is safe... *He lets out a gasp of relief* "After learning that she had been declared lost in the Delta Volanis Cluster, I took the Avalon's Yellowstone-class runabout Golden Gate to personally find her. I acknowledge here in this log that my actions were irrational and driven only by my love for her, therefore I only embarked on this quest by myself, preemptively relieving myself of command duties and turning over command of Avalon to Commander Edwards prior to my departure. Let the record show that this was entirely my decision; no one on the Avalon should be held accountable for what I have done other than myself. "When I received the message that Alana was declared missing, my whole world imploded. I relived the pain I had felt when Kalera was murdered by Jaroda all over again ten fold. I never had a chance to say goodbye to my wife, to tell her how much I loved her and how much I would miss her. Once I received Lieutenant Grall's message earlier today concerning Lana, all that pain I had felt months ago came back to haunt me. "That is why I did what I have done. That's why I ordered the shuttlebay to prep the Golden Gate for departure. That's why under Regulation 619 I relieved myself of command duty and turned over control of the Avalon to my first officer. I knew the course I was about to set could potentially end my career; that is why I had to insulate my officers and crew from what at worst could have gotten me killed. "My obligation as captain of the Avalon demanded that, just as my obligation as a man to Alana demanded that I embark on this endeavor, even if it had failed. And now here she is, safe and sound. We love each other, we want to grow old together. Just as I thought her loss would have ripped my life entirely apart, I knew that if I didn't try to look for her on my own, let alone rescued her, I would have died inside. I wouldn't have had a reason to go on. "Thankfully, though, she is alive and well. God or Prophets willing we will spend the rest of our lives together. Therefore, I hereby under regulation declare that the invocation of Regulation 619 is null and void. I am no longer emotionally compromised by the mission at hand and am ready to resume my duties as captain of the Federation starship Avalon. "Furthermore, pursuant to Gunnery Sergeant Summers' request, I hereby appoint her to the post of quartermaster of the Federation starship Avalon. Since that position requires her to be a commissioned officer in Starfleet, under the authority granted in me by Starfleet Command and the United Federation of Planets, I hereby promote her to the field commission of lieutenant, with all rights and privileges thereto. Her long service with the Starfleet Marine Corps plus her post-graduate work makes her worthy of such a promotion. She has proven herself an asset to the Avalon and to me personally. She has made me a better man and a better captain. "Of course, all this talk is dependent based on what Admiral Spoon has to say of my behavior today. I abandoned my post to embark on a personal rescue op; may sound romantic, but I still violated the regs. I may have brought my one true love home, but the admiral may decide to make me a eunuch. That's not exactly going to be beneficial to my relationship with Lana. "We should be returning to the Avalon tomorrow, hopefully before my father arrives on DS9 with my son. Darren will never know his mother, but thanks to my efforts, he will know the woman who may one day become his step-mother."

"Computer, end Captain's Log. Begin Commander's Log: 88235.41
"Admiral Kent Spoon, commanding officer of the Beta Ursae Defense Force, has demoted me from the rank of captain to commander due to my actions in regards to the disappearance of Lieutenant Alana Summers. While I retain command of the Avalon, flagship of the BUDF, I am now subordinate to every captain in the fleet. No doubt my days in the center seat are numbered.
"As it should be. A starship needs a captain, not a three pipper. Therefore, upon completion of the Avalon's next assignment, I intend to offer my resignation from Starfleet regardless of the outcome. For what it is worth, I recommend Captain Varal to assume command of the Avalon, failing that, Commander Gathis Edwards. Both are excellent command officers and will serve this ship well. Clearly they both deserve the captaincy since in the admiral's eyes I clearly do not simply because...
"Computer, end log, now!"
"Personal Log: Supplemental
"[CENSORED] Admiral Spoon. [CENSORED] him and the high horse he rode in on..."
*Pauses as he suddenly realizes that his tone of voice sounds exactly like the father he so loathes*
"I knew what I was doing, that I'd risk throwing away my career based on love, but I did so in a fashion that'd protect myself and my crew from reciprocity. Load of good it did me; I've been busted in rank. I'm a lame duck and my career's finished. And you know what the damndest thing is? I'd do it all over again. Not only if Alana or Darren were in trouble, but if anyone I cared about was in this situation. Hromar, Vanora, Kiso; I'd've done it for any of them and two out of the three did it for me, so why am I the one getting castrated?
"I intentionally took action to save Alana in a fashion that would minimize the possible loss of Starfleet personnel and equipment. Yes, I freely admit I flaunted my four pips, that I embarked on a private, personal mission without sanction to save Alana, but guess what? I did that for Kal, too, and she ended up being murdered in my arms! Where the hell was Starfleet then?! Why wasn't I broken in rank for doing what I did then, huh?!
*His tone of voice is elevated to the point where Darren is now wide awake and crying back in the bedroom where Alana is also sleeping, but Jason isn't done yet*
"My father commanded a starship during the Dominion War, he was an admiral for many years since, and yet I never asked for any special treatment. I have constantly lived my live and based my career on doing things my way, the way I thought best. I've busted my ass to fulfill the needs of others, be it members of my crew or fellow Starfleet officers. The one moment I do something out of pure selfishness and suddenly I'm the villain.
*Darren is quite upset and his cries are probably rousing Alana from her slumber*
"You know what, to hell with it! If that's the game Spoon's willing to play, then I want no part of it. As soon as the Avalon's mission is over tomorrow, I'm out. He ripped one pip off my uniform, I intend to jam the remaining three down his goddamn..."
*a pause*
"Dad...?"
"Com...Ship's Log: Stardate 88237.6
"The Avalon has completed a patrol of Deferi space against Breen raiders. We found the Breen, just not the type we were expecting. We engaged and destroyed two Breen vessels assimilated by the Borg. We were unable to save one Deferi scout craft, but we were able to save several other Deferi ships. The Avalon was boarded by Borg drones, Breen and Jem'Hadar in origin; the bridge, main engineering, and sickbay were attacked but all boarders were repelled. Additionally, we recovered multiple drones from the wreck of the second ship. They have been confined to Cargo Bay 3 pending liberation and repatriation to their nations of origin. Perhaps this can help improve relations with the Breen Confederacy and the Dominion. Let the record show my highest pride in this ship's crew in dealing with this ordeal.
"Additionally, I have announced to my crew my intentions to remain as the Avalon's commanding officer in spite of my reduced rank, though I vow that I will do what it takes to get my captaincy back. My actions on this day and the intel I intend to provide to Admiral Spoon regarding the Romulan presence should earn me the right to wear my fourth pip once more."
*Occasionally, the happy cooing of Jason's son Darren can be heard in the background*
"Personal Log: Supplemental
"I was this close to calling it quits today. I was so ready to resign my commission, walk away from the Avalon and Starfleet in some idiotic means of exacting payback against Admiral Spoon.
"And in stepped Alana to set me straight. After our..time together today, I realized the place for her, me, and my son was aboard the Avalon and that I should fight as hard as I can to stay on as captain. Although I am certain that my actions as commander of this ship against the Borg can and should justify restoring me to my proper rank, I have something else that should entice Admiral Spoon to give me back my fourth pip.
"I have...received intel on General Tomalar from...a source. Intel that if made public could destroy her career, intel that may convince Admiral Spoon to expel all Romulan ships from the Beta Ursae Sector Block. Hell, it could be enough to convince General Karag's forces to try to wipe the Romulan forces in this quadrant out once and for all.
"The information I possess is volatile and must be given over to Admiral Spoon and him alone so that he may determine the next course of action. I do not intend to use it to extort him into giving me my rank back. I will deliver it to him the same time I turn in my final report concerning the recent Borg attacks in Deferi space. It is my hope that giving up such information freely will bode testament to my character as a captain and as a Starfleet officer in general. If after all that has happened the last two days and he's still not willing to back down, then he should hope he's damn well prepared to have the senior officers aboard the flagship of his fleet mutiny against him.
"On a far more personal note, just when I thought I couldn't be more in love with Alana, I find more reasons to. She is a great source of strength for me. After I rescued her, I told her that she makes me a better man and a better captain. She told me that was the most romantic thing anyone's ever said to her. I intend to find ways to restate that truism every day, preferably as her captain. I may have wound up in this mess because of my decision to rescue her on my own, but I am convinced that it was the right thing to do, both for me as the man who loves her more than anything else and for the crew she so clearly deserves to be a part of.
"And will you stop trying to pick my nose, Darren?!"
"Personal Log: Supplemental
"My attempts to persuade Admiral Spoon to restore my rank have failed. Although my demotion in his eyes is a temporary and unofficial one, I still feel...blacklisted. Oh well; my crew supports me as does Alana. That's what is important."
"Ship's Log: Stardate 88243.6
"I cannot help but wonder if I am a magnet for trouble. Following yesterday's bombing that nearly claimed the life of DS9's first officer, Commander Samuel Johnson, myself and my crew, most notably Lieutenant Commander Seventeen of Twenty-Five have been dragged into the ongoing conspiracy of Bajoran insurgents opposed to their plants membership in the Federation and Starfleet's brief presence in the city of Hathon. Our investigation is ongoing and hopefully will net us a culprit soon. In the meantime, the mayor of Hathon, Salen Del, will be traveling to the station soon in an attempt to show solidarity with the Federation. His visit will undoubtedly draw the assassins out into making another attempt against either him or Hro...Captain Williams. We must be ready.
"Additionally, the Avalon has received word of her next assignment: a first contact mission in the Rolor Nebula with a civilization on the verge of achieving faster than light travel. Full details will be incoming from the Federation's First Contact Office. That our mission nearly coincides with First Contact Day is mere icing on the cake. To have the honor of welcoming a new race into the galactic community? That's the dream of every Starfleet officer.
"In a final note, Gunnery Sergeant Alana Summers has been reassigned to the position of assistant counselor, a role she has demonstrated great competence in. Although we already have one assigned to the ship, I feel it is in the crew's best interests to have as many helping hands as possible. Although we now have multiple assistant counselors, the Avalon is a large vessel and having only two psychologists on staff in the face of the collective neuroses of 2,500 souls is not acceptable. This ship deserves the talent displayed by the gunny and Miss Chrysler. Their hard work and their dedication is exactly what my ship needs now..."
"Ship's Log: Supplemental
"The situation with the Romulan presence in the Beta Ursae Sector Block has come to a head. After confronted with the evidence levied against her, General Tomalar's forces have apparently withdrawn from this sector. However, she did not leave until making mention of moving on to Phase 2, of what is still unknown. Have we thwarted whatever plans the Tal Shiar have had for us or have we only put them into motion?
"Although Admiral Spoon has ordered business as usual, I cannot help but feel the need for further vigilance. For when we demonstrate that we are relaxed, that would be the perfect time for them to strike..."
*sounding as tired as he ever sounded before*
"Ship's Log: Supplemental
"Today was an interesting confluence of events. Earlier, the Bajoran terrorist group claiming to be a resurrection of the Circle executed another attack on Deep Space Nine. I was trapped in Ops with Captain Williams and several other officers at the mercy of the terrorist mastermind, who announced he had planted addition devices on the station and one in the CDF headquarters on Cardassia Prime. I departed aboard the Avalon using her slipstream drive to assist the Cardassians in defusing this weapon. We were successful and for now the terrorist plot of the Circle seems to have been thwarted.
"However, not a mere few minutes after the Avalon returned to Deep Space Nine, General Tomalar's flagship, the Valdore de-cloaked and she demanded to negotiate with Captain Williams. Her warbird wasn't alone, as the Avalon's sensors could attest to. After seemingly mitigating Tomalar's advantage, she spoke with myself and the captain in his office, where she, claiming to speak for the Romulan Star Empire, demanded that the Federation cede full control of the Teneebia Sector to her government. Obviously, neither myself nor the captain were willing to accede to her demands, let alone had the authority to. She threatened war, we responded in kind to defend DS9. All 11 ship including the Valdore were destroyed and the general was taken into custody.
"After a tense exchange with Senator Jarok, Admiral Spoon ordered the Avalon to transport General Tomalar to a more secure holding facility on Earth. We have successfully delivered the package and are returning to Deep Space Nine at slipstream velocities. As much as I hope that the general's capture puts an end to this crisis, 79 of her vessels are still unaccounted for and the Romulan Empire as a whole has not weighed in on her actions. This may only be the beginning..."
*Darren's cries can be heard in the background as a tired Jason speaks*
"Personal log: Starda..Supplemental
"I tried to prevent this, I tried to talk Tomalar out of what ultimately happened, but she refused to back down. D'Llhran in the end was right; she acted as a patriot of the Romulan Star Empire and her soldiers were butchered because of it. She stared me down in Hromar's office, told me to tempt her. I countered that she had declared war against the Federation, that I shouldn't be tempted to unleash the Avalon's full arsenal against the Valdore. She baited me and and I rose to the occasion. Despite my best efforts, her fleet was wiped out with minimal losses. I cannot help but feel that she wanted a causus belli and I just furnished her with one.
"At any rate, Admiral Spoon's plan worked. Tomalar is now in the custody of Starfleet Command on Earth. We can only hope that what's left of the Romulan government will declare her a renegade regardless of whether or not her actions were sanctioned. The Romulans cannot sustain a protracted war, particularly one against the Federation, the Klingon Empire, and the Reman separatists who'd gladly join the cause. And yet we must consider the Iconians and their part in this; though the Romulans appear to lack a strong leader, one cannot help but wonder if the so-called demons of air and darkness are pulling strings behind the scenes.
"This...wasn't supposed to be how today was going to go. I did not intend to spend today up to my eyeballs dealing with Bajoran terrorists and Tal Shiar machinations. Today I intended to celebrate my son entering his third month into the universe and to...recognize that Alana is much more than a girlfriend or lover, but a full member of my family. Our family. Instead, I did what I could to ensure that our family will be safe yet again..."
*He tries to rock Darren to sleep, all the while staring at a diaper bag on his desk with a glare that suggests that he wants to shove the damn thing out an airlock*
"Ship's Log: Stardate 88253.3
The Avalon received a distress call from the shuttlecraft Rosetta, piloted by Captain Varal of the Tiberius and two of her officers. Upon arriving at the mining colony where the shuttle was, we rescued the captain and her crew while we engaged and were forced to destroy a Romulan bird of prey that claimed it had orders to hunt the captain down. On top of the recent events regarding General Tomalar, I fear that relations with the Federation and the Romulan Empire will only get worse and that war may be a distinct possibility..."
"Ship's Log: Stardate 88256.2
"In a few hours, the Avalon will be heading to the planet Mendar IV to initiate first contact procedures with the indigenous population, which is now on the verge of warp travel. Information gathered over the years indicates that the Mendari are a peaceful, spiritual people who should be welcoming of our arrival. Astrometrics should keep an eye on subspace storms in the vicinity of the Mendar system."
"Personal Log: Supplemental
"Admiral Spoon will be joining us on the mission. I'm screwed."
*lacking any preamble whatsoever*
"Captain's Log: Supplemental
"Our mission to Mendari IV was a success. Not only were we given the honor of witnessing their world's first warp flight, but myself and Assistant Counselor Samantha Chrystler had the privilege of making first contact with with the planet's primarch and inviting him aboard the ship briefly. This is but the Mendarian's first step into the greater interstellar community, but I believe it was a good one. Recommendations for follow-up contacts have been submitted to the First Contact Office.
"Additionally, Commander Twenty-Five noted unusual temporal readings emanating from the subspace storms that surround the Mendari system. We left a Class 1 sensor probe to monitor them for the next few days.
"Finally, this day has also seen a new addition to the Avalon's family. Kiana Stratiss, daughter of Nurse Kat Stratiss, was born during this mission. Like the Mendarian people, Nurse Stratiss and her daughter are about to be exposed to a whole new universe of possibilities...
"And note to Engineering: look into disabling the main computer's ability to know when I'm not in uniform."
"Captain's Log: Supplemental
"A meeting has just concluded among Romulan Senator Jarok and Admirals tr'Lhaithra, Shull, Spoon, myself, and a Klingon general. The Romulan Empire's official position is that General Tomalar and her forces are renegades. Unfortunately, the talks broke down in regards to Romulan assistance in tracking down the remainder of the general's fleet. The only other good news is that renegade fleet no longer appears to be in the Beta Ursae Sector Block.
"For the moment, at least..."
"Captain's Personal Log: Stardate 88270.9
"Absolutely nothing out of the ordinary happened today. Go read someone else's personal log, Arcen."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88274.8
"Absent specific orders from Starfleet and the BUDF Command, the Avalon will continue her normal patrols around Deep Space Nine and Bajor. However, as experience has proven time and time again, there is no such thing as a routine patrol..."
"Captain's Log: Supplemental. Recorded under security protocol Quebec Juliet Delta 5.
"During the Avalon's latest patrol, we received orders to divert to Versha Minor in the Dorvan Sector to deliver medical supplies to treat an outbreak of the Invirian Measles. With time of the essence, we engaged our advanced quantum slipstream drive and proceeded to our destination.
"Then Q showed up. The very same Q who plagued Captains Picard, Sisko, and Janeway along with the crew of the starship Everest. He demanded that we assist him in retrieving his granddaughter from the Organians. We only complied until after he snapped his fingers and ended the medical crisis on Versha. With his 'assistance,' we were promptly transported to Organia where the inhabitants were all too eager to let us take the younger Q off their hands.
"My highest compliments to my crew for their patience and restraint in dealing with the presence of Q, particularly Commanders Gathis Edwards, Morliani Shan, and Fearos. He claims he'll be watching us and I can only hope our resolve remains true during our next encounter..."

"Captain's Personal Log: Stardate 88284.6
"I have been reluctant to record one of these for some time, but I...
"Am I an idiot? Do I constantly see potential love interests as merely surrogate mothers for Darren and only that? Did I force Alana and now Liani into relationships with me in the hope that they can fill the role for my son that Jaroda denied him? Was I being completely selfish where my son is concerned while operating under the delusion of being unselfish?
"I have so convinced myself that Darren needs a mother figure in his life. Truthfully, I can't raise him alone, but at the same time, is it right of me to demand that being with me also entails being Darren's stepmother? Is that why I was heartbroken when Alana...said what she said? Not because of what it'd mean to me but what'd it mean to my son?
"I love Darren dearly; he is not only one of the best things that ever happened to me but he is also the only physical proof that Kalera ever existed. Maybe I am being unfair to him, everyone else, and myself. Maybe all Darren needs in this life is me and I shouldn't be so desperate to bring someone else in. My...desire to fill the missing piece for my son has backfired twice, first with Katherine and then with Alana...
"Or maybe I'm just chasing at shadows. Perhaps it isn't the void in Darren's life I'm trying to fill, but the one in my own. Kal is...irreplaceable. What if I haven't truly moved beyond her death despite my best efforts? What if my attempts at romance are merely attempts at creating a life that I'll never have? Kal is dead and no one, not Katherine, not Alana, and maybe not even Liani will ever replace her role in my life or Darren's.
"I wish I could get away for a few days, to clear my head, but I can't. The Avalon needs me and with Hromar on leave, I'm the ranking captain in the Beta Ursae Defense Force still at his post. My duties keep me here, so therefore I must suffer from this bout of unease. 'Smile and nod,' as my father would say. 'Don't let your crew see you sweat...'"
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88292.3
"The Dominion has sent a transmission through the communications relay in the Gamma Quadrant, requesting Federation aid in dealing with a developing situation. Ferengi merchants have been spotted in their territory attempting to conduct business; the Dominion regards this as a violation of their space. Perhaps due to the recent events at Deep Space Nine, they have invited a Starfleet vessel to enter the Gamma Quadrant to convince the Ferengi to depart Dominion territory peacefully.
"The Avalon has been tasked with this assignment. If we cannot convince them that there is no profit to be had in their latest enterprise, the consequences will likely be...tragic."
"Captain's Log: Supplemental
"Our mission to the Gamma Quadrant was interrupted by a sudden gravimetric distortion that struck the ship within the Bajoran wormhole. The Avalon sustained heavy damage and most of her systems were disabled. Using the Excalibur as a temporary source of power, we were able to ride the eddies and currents of the wormhole into the Gamma Quadrant, where we were able to complete our mission with the Ferengi. The Ferengi were...kind enough to tow us back to the Alpha Quadrant. Repairs are ongoing and I am sure Mr. Fearos and his team will get the Avalon fully operational before our next assignment.
"My highest compliments to the crew in weathering this crisis. And while Commander Seventeen of Twenty-Five's attempts to form a collective in order to effect repairs more quickly were questionable, she complied when ordered to stand down. I am certain that she will serve this vessel well in the future as chief science officer, even if she doesn't realize it yet..."
"Captain's Personal Log: Supplemental
"I'm almost reluctant to recount this particular portion of our last mission for fear I'd come off as completely insane. Thanks to a gravimetric distortion in the Bajoran wormhole, the Avalon was crippled. I experienced a state of helplessness I haven't felt since I lost the Midway, since Kalera died...
"And then, suddenly, there she was, as alive and as real as she was all those months ago. She told me I needed to let go and move on, not just for my sake but for Darren's, too. I was tempted to say it'd be hard, that suddenly seeing her in the flesh as it were would make it harder, but I didn't. She's my wife. She's always right..."
Sighing, Jason Hunter ended the log entry and sat back in his desk chair in his quarters. It was a mess; furniture, belongings, and knick-knacks were strewn about. How his son was able to fall asleep in all this was beyond the captain. It was one more mystery on top of the even bigger one he experienced. Was that really his wife? Was she with the so-called Prophets in the equally so-called Celestial Temple? Or was his grief making him hallucinate?
Deciding to inspect damage, Hunter got up from his chair and reflexively said, "Computer, activate holographic nanny."
Said nanny appeared. She was decked out in period wear from Earth's 19th Century and while was usually unflappable, had a look of terror on her face. In mid-sentence, she said, "...the bloody hell is going on here?!"
"What's wrong?" Hunter asked with concern.
"Captain!" the hologram shouted, turning to him. She then glanced about the quarters and likely commenting on its state of distress added, "Wait, what's going on? Did that woman...?"
"Calm down! Start from the beginning. What woman?"
"An Orion woman wearing white. I swear on me grandmother's grave that she looked exactly like your late wife. I came back in here after going to get a toy to calm little Darren down, then she appears out of nowhere and shut me off. What happened? Why's the room such a bloody mess?"
Wheels started to click in Hunter's mind. He hurried into the bedroom and found Darren asleep in his crib, exactly as he had found him before when he had returned from the bridge. He had assumed that the holonanny had been knocked out due to the power loss the Avalon sustained, but now...he had a different theory. That someone else had been in his quarters and watched over his son...their son.
"Sir, what's going here?" the nanny pleaded quietly.
Oh, he had a good idea, that perhaps it wasn't a hallucination he had experienced earlier in the wormhole. A smile crept across Hunter's face. His largest regret was that Darren would never meet his mother. That, in some unfathomable way, was no longer the case...
"Captain's Personal Log: Stardate 88297.8
"After having a day to digest the events of last night...I still don't know how to describe what happened. I know what I saw what I was on the bridge; my crew confirmed that for several minutes I was immobile and unresponsive, like those who have experienced visions from the wormhole aliens. The holonanny confirms that someone matching Kalera's description appeared in my quarters and deactivated her. The voiceprint from the program's activity log matches Kal's voice exactly, right on down to her using the word 'sweetie.' The hologram was shut off exactly 60 seconds before the Avalon struck the gravimetric distortion in the wormhole. Those facts and the fact that my son was sound asleep when I returned from the bridge are proof that something extraordinary happened.
"But the ship's internal sensors confirm that the only non-photonic being my quarters at the time was my son. My son's back-up baby monitor was knocked out when main and auxiliary power failed. Other than that one recording of Kal speaking, there is no other proof that she was on the ship in whatever form she took other than the account of the hologram. When I explained all this to her adoptive father, he was skeptical, to say the least. The Starfleet officer in me wants to look at this with an equally skeptical eye, to seek out hard evidence to explain the events myself, the nanny, and perhaps even Darren have witnessed.
"And yet, on the other hand, part of me is willing to accept all this on...faith. To not dig any further and believe what happened as it appeared to happen. Maybe it's not the attitude of an explorer, someone who's obligated to pursue fact over speculation, but it's certainly the attitude of a widower who seeks comfort in seeing his love for one last time. The attitude of a father who's grateful that his son was able to spend time with his mother. I don't necessarily buy into the Bajoran faith as my wife did, but perhaps Kiso was right when he described these events as a miracle.
"I know I certainly can't think of a more apt description..."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88311.2
"Due to hazards posed by the gravimetric disturbances in the wormhole, Starfleet and the Beta Ursae Defense Force have tasked the Avalon with mapping these phenomena. Once our task is complete it should ensure safe travel between the Alpha and Gamma Quadrants. Naturally, appropriate precautions will be taken to ensure the disaster that befell the Avalon last week will not happen again.
"And hopefully nothing...further out of the ordinary will happen again..."
"Captain's Log: Supplemental
"Our mission to chart the gravimetric distortions within the Bajoran wormhole was a success and we may have even located a cause. The Avalon located a derelict Jem'Hadar attack ship that was leaking drive plasma, which may be the source of the distortions that crippled us a week ago. Preliminary analysis indicates that the vessel was part of Kar'ukan's fleet that was transported to the present from the days of the Dominion War. Further investigation will be required to determine how the ship was damaged and as per Mr. Fearos' recommendation full quarantine and decontamination procedures will be implemented.
"Finally, my compliments to Science Officer Seventeen of Twenty-Five for developing a method of using our deflector dish to ride out the gravimetric distortions. Until these hazards dissipate, I recommend all vessels attempting to enter the Gamma Quadrant should utilize her procedure."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88320.3
"Pursuant to recent events, I am ordering a full medical and psychological battery of tests be conducted on Ensign Liana Cutelef pending a disciplinary hearing. The findings of the Avalon's chief medical officer and counselor will be weighed heavily in my decision as to whether or not the ensign will remain as a member of my ship's crew. She has an already checkered record and if I do not see anything to explain away what I saw her do tonight, her days as a member of this ship's crew are rapidly drawing to a close."
"Captain's Personal Log: Supplemental
"Operation Ocean continues and promises to be a success. Nothing finer than to out game a Ferengi."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88323.0
*long sigh*
"Admiral D'Llhran tr'Lhaithra was almost assassinated today in Quark's on DS9. The assassin, who was the replacement for General Tomalar, is in custody pending a military tribunal, one that myself and Captain Williams have been ordered to serve on the trial board for. Therefore, I shall not make any further reference to this in my log until the tribunal has concluded."
"Captain's Personal Log: Supplemental
"I'm really in over my head, aren't I? Military tribunal, disciplinary hearing, trying to mess with the odds in the betting pool in Quark's. Some days I wonder why I ever leave the Avalon. Of course, then I'd miss out on assassination attempts, Arcen TKing face-hugging Nunians, and ravishing French Trill that I'd really consider...
"Yeah, computer, end log before I really say something stupid. Or start drooling."
"Captain's Personal Log: Stardate 88328.5
"In addition to the continued complications posed by my being appointed to the trial board of the pending military tribunal along with the politics that comes with it, my father has arrived to look after my son while this latest task occupies my attention. Throw that on top of Operation Ocean quickly spiraling out of control and my normal duties as captain of the Avalon and I find myself wishing I could pull a Hromar and disappear for the next two weeks, preferably on some remote corner of Risa."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88330.6
"The Avalon has been assigned to resolve a dispute between dilithium miners on Omicron Kappa 9 and their employers. The miners are protesting their working conditions and until the deadlock can be ended, the flow of the valuable mineral will cease and the Federation's war efforts will be severely hampered."
"Captain's Personal Log: Supplemental
"And I thought Federation criminal law was daunting to comprehend. Now I'm up to my neck in labor law. Just another day aboard the Federation starship Avalon..."
"Captain's Log: Supplemental
"The Avalon has completed her mission to Omicron Kappa 9. Upon our arrival, the administrator of the primary mine, DaiMon Sheg, invited us down for an inspection to verify the veracity of the concerns of the miners. Those doubts were well founded; not long after my away team arrived, the complex collapsed due to over-mining and insufficient safety precautions. Killed in the collapse was Crewman Xenia Pendable; my condolences to her family and friends and let the record show she gave her life in the line of duty.
"With the assistance of Chief Engineer Fearos and Chief of Security Palla Sarish, we were able to evacuate the miners into transporter range and all were recovered by the Avalon. Recommend that in addition to the violations of mining safety regulations DaiMon Shreg be charged with the death of Crewman Pendable.
"Compliments to the members of the away team for aiding in the evacuation, Lieutenant Rin Itaschi for filling in at the science station, and Commander Morliani Shan once more for taking the conn of the Avalon."
"Captain's Personal Log: Supplemental
"Ordinarily, almost getting buried alive would constitute being the strangest thing that happened to me today. But it isn't...
"Earlier today in Quark's an officer serving under Senator Jarok claimed that my son was the ra'khoh. Arcen told me the word translates to 'Avenger' in Romulan and the way the subcommander was reacting I initially thought it meant that Darren was a messiah of some sort. I was wrong. As D'Llhran violently pointed out to me, the ra'khoh is closer to the harbinger of the apocalypse for the Romulan people. The so-called Avenger heralds the end of the current age and the beginning of the new, quite violently from what I understand. Simply put, my son's the Romulan Anti-Christ. Obviously I don't know if I believe this prophecy, but clearly some Romulans do, making Darren a target just as Benjamin Sisko and Miral Paris were to their respective faiths. Suffice to say, no Romulan fanatic is getting within a kilometer of my son.
"Thankfully, it wasn't all bad news today. First and foremost being that Liani is back from her conference and while explaining everything that has happened in her absence will be...lengthy, I am grateful for her return. No matter how many mines collapse around my ears or religious nuts target my son, I can count on her to back me and Darren. Second, Captain Varal of the Tiberius is apparently D'Llhran's daughter, making her via Romulan tradition and law a sister to me. I can't think of anyone else I'd be proud to consider as a sibling.
"Finally, I should reconsider the policy on visitors on the Avalon. Last thing I want is my father or Arcen causing mischief on the bridge of my ship during a crisis."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88346.3
"The tribunal in regards to the attempt on Admiral D'Llhran tr'Lhaiththra's life has concluded. In a unanimous decision, the trial board concluded that the Federation has sufficient cause to formally charge the defendant with attempted murder. The stabbing occurred while the admiral wore a Starfleet uniform, it occurred aboard a Federation space station and while it occurred within the confines of Quark's, the Ferengi Alliance has given the Federation carte blanche in how to address this apparent crime. Though the Rules of Acquisition fail to make mention of this, stabbings clearly aren't good for business. Now, we wait for the fallout with the Romulan Empire..."
"Captain's Personal Log: Supplemental
"Due to the tribunal today, I haven't had a chance to mention the events of the day before in my log. It was my privilege, with my sister Clarie, my son Darren, and Clarie's daughter Rebecca, to preside over the wedding of my father to Clarie's mother Bridget. Dad and I have had our differences in the past, but it felt good to share a happy occasion for once. Just hope I don't regret letting him have my step-mother and Becky move in with him on the Avalon.
"And it seems Hromar's finally found a slice of happiness. Just wish I laid money down on May."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88349.6
"The Avalon is set to play host to a diplomatic function tomorrow. All appropriate protocols are to be in place and formal uniforms are required. Avalon is a fleet flagship and the sister ship of the Enterprise; putting our best foot forward is imperative..."
"Captain's Personal Log: Supplemental
"I've finished assisting my step-mother getting settled in with my niece Rebecca on the Avalon. While I am pleased to have more members of my family here, I m concerned about the inherent dangers of having them aboard a starship. Fortunately, our current mission seems to be devoid of danger. Still, I'm tempted to run a few chevron separation drills just to be safe.
"And I am also very tempted to give the head of the KDF's Task Force Ruztah a bottle of bloodwine in spite of our past animosity. General Karag's sex romp with Captain Tira Vero in the holosuites of Quark's seems to have shifted the focus of local gossip away from myself and Liani. For the moment..."
"Captain's Log: Supplemental
"The diplomatic function this evening was marred by the presence of an intruder, a Ferengi who had assumed the identity of Andorian Ambassador Shylan. Once exposed, he was taken into custody by Lieutenant Colonel Kallie Stratis and Lieutenant Pallra Sarish. Special thanks to our Diplomatic Officer Captain Nancy Slater, Admiral Kiso Hsalo, Nurse Maladycta Stratis, and her daughter Kiana for uncovering the imposter. No doubt the Ferengi will soon inform us of the whereabouts of the real Ambassador Shylan.
"Other than that, the evening was a...rousing success."
*ends his log, then wonders just how a Ferengi could be surgically altered to appear to be an Andorian...and shudders*
"Captain's Personal Log: Supplemental
"Now this has been an eventful day. Apparently thanks to whatever my father said in Quark's yesterday, Liani was declared the winner of the Jason Hunter Sweepstakes. Due to my...inside information, the Orphans of War charity organization is about to receive a substantial donation. Of course this means our relationship is no longer a secret and thankfully Liani is okay with being more open about our involvement. She's very special to me and I foresee us spending a lot of time together for a very long time.
"It's also nice to see Hromar finding happiness with Kara, as well. And...I could've sworn I saw Mr. Cortelia with Lieutenant Pallra on the dance floor, too. Eh, never mind. I don't want my log turning into a gossip column..."
"Captain's Personal Log: Stardate 88355.8
"Had another date with Liani tonight and it too was a stellar success. While I felt a little odd about courting her openly in the Round Table this evening, the more time I spend with her, the more I am convinced that we're right for each other. She is...the perfect compliment to me; Liani's not afraid to push me out of my comfort zone, which makes me a better man and a captain in the process. She clearly cares about me and she cares about my son; who could possibly ask for anything more from a woman? I don't want to get ahead of myself but...between Q's praise of Liani and the apparition of Kalera telling me to move on with my life, I cannot help but wonder if I've found the one. Liani and I have clearly expressed our desires to see our relationship through for the long haul. Time will hopefully tell.
"I also had the privilege today of serving as father of the bride for...a Kat Stratis in her wedding to Colonel Kallie Stratis in the Bajoran temple on Deep Space Nine. I may have been feeling selfish, but all the while during ceremony I couldn't help but recall my impromptu wedding to Kal in that very temple. That was one of the happiest moments of my life and in spite of the tragic circumstances of Kalera's murder, I still have fond memories of that time. Maybe in the future I'll get to re-experience those feelings of joy that Kat and Tex felt...maybe with Liani, if I'm lucky.
"Also, King...Admiral Serat was on the station today and caught at least part of the wedding. He is one of Kal's dearest friends by way of the memories she inherited from Jaroda. There's a lot about Xander that I don't know but as far as I'm concerned, the Avalon is at his disposal if he needs it. If there is anything the Federation can do to help him deal with the complicated situation on his homeworld, wherever it may be, it behooves us to try. I owe Kal at least that much...
"On a final note, I should probably find a more permanent solution to Mr. Fearos'...insomnia. And find a way to prevent Zap from hugging anyone at random. Easier said than done..."
*as he ends his log, he hears a stirring from his bedroom...*
"Captain's Personal Log: Stardate 88363.9
"It was Mother's Day for some of the human members of the Avalon's crew today, myself and my father included. It was nice to spend this holiday with my step-mother Bridget and my sister Clarie and yet every time I looked at my son Darren I couldn't help but feel something was missing. Hromar obviously misinterpreted my request to have the Avalon moved to the closest anchorage to the wormhole. I...just wanted my son to be close to his mother as possible on a day like this.
"Of course once more, it seems that Dad is the magnet for...accidents at the dinner table. This time, both his grandchildren spat up on his favorite suit. I know I haven't been a parent as long as he, I certainly know better than to wear my finest around fed infants..."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88369.01
"The Avalon has been tasked with a standard patrol of the Beta Ursae Sector Block. Accompanying us on this mission will be several other vessels of the BUDF. With the Borg activity in the region and the other usual suspects, I'm glad for safety in numbers this time around..."
"Captain's Log: Supplemental
"During the Avalon's patrol, we picked up a distress call from a convoy of Cardassian cargo vessels that were under attack by Romulan vessels. Upon our arrival at the battle site, we quickly discovered that these vessels were part of the lost fleet of General Tomalar. With the assistance of the starships Copeland and Kusanagi and the unexpected help of the Klingon warship Reclaw, all hostile forces were either destroyed or routed. Once the survivors of the Cardassian ships were recovered, the Avalon plotted a course back to Deep Space Nine where in addition to repairs she will undergo a baryon sweep to eliminate an infestation of Talarian hook spiders. How these pests got aboard ship is presently unknown.
"Note that inquiries should be made in regards to the present status of General Tomalar herself. Although at last report she was in Federation custody, her current whereabouts are classified. If she has somehow escaped or found a way to communicate with her forces, it would explain much.
"Finally, until this Sunday, Commander Gathis Edwards is in command of the Avalon while I am on personal leave on Bajor. After recent events, we...I need it..."
"Captain's Personal Log: Supplemental
"Wouldn't you know it? Upon returning to DS9 from leave on Bajor, I walk into Quark's only to find out that Hromar and Kara are engaged to be married with me to serve as best man. I couldn't be happier for H; although my marriage to Kal ended in tragedy, I still regard our union as one of the best things that ever happened to me. Here's hoping that Hromar will experience the same joy and that he and Kara will have many happy years together. Of course, now I'm forced to plan a bachelor party and think of something poignant to say in my wedding toast.
"At the same time, I find myself thinking of the current state of my relationship with Liani. Due to circumstances with our responsibilities aboard ship, we've not been able to court each other openly in the same amount of time Hromar and his would-be-bride have done so. And yet with all the pressure Liani and I face with our professional lives, I don't want to rush into something we're not ready for. My relationship with her is far too important to me to screw up by jumping the gun. Are we in love? Maybe. We've all but said that and yet we haven't; lack of time together and our duties aboard the Avalon have interfered with our cultivating a meaningful romantic relationship beyond our dreadfully few encounters. At the very least she's crazy about Darren, which is a good thing to have for any single father. But are we ready for marriage? Hopefully time will tell. Experience has taught me that such things can't be forced. All I can do is be happy for H and Kara in a time like this and hope that some day Liani and I will reach that position...
"...great, now I've got to plan a bachelor party that won't get any of us in trouble. At least it won't be as awkward as what Puma or Arcen would have in store for us..."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88388.03
"The Avalon will be departing the station on a routine anti-Borg patrol of the Alpha Trianguli Sector Block. Due to the dangers involved, we will be leaving all non-essential personnel and civilians behind on Deep Space Nine."
"Captain's Log: Supplemental
"Recorded under Security Lock Omega Three Nine...
"The Avalon's true assignment may be her most dangerous one yet. Starfleet has lost contact with our colony on Bindaris II in the Amaltha Sector. Scout vessels were sent to investigate, but contact with them was lost, as well. The only clue to what's causing this is a garbled transmission that described a yellowish-gold organic creature of considerable size.
"That isn't much to go on, but the obvious suspects in this are the Undine. If they have launched an invasion of this region of the Alpha Quadrant, then many lives beyond the 200,000 souls on the colony are in jeopardy. The Avalon may be the only starship that stands in their way. I am under orders to not discuss the situation with anyone save the senior staff but only after our departure at 1900 hours station time tomorrow.
"As mentioned in the cover log, I've taken the precaution of ordering all non-essential personnel off the ship. This may raise eyebrows, but Captain Williams was quite explicit in his desire to avoid causing a panic based on partial information. Until departure, all I can do is wait...and hope..."

"Captain's Log: Stardate 88409.9
"With the confidentiality order now expiring, I am now able to the relate the events of last week in the official captain's log. The Avalon departed Deep Space Nine as scheduled and proceeded to Bindaris II at maximum warp. The senior officers were naturally concerned over the fate of the colony and about the prospects of engaging in battle against the Undine, but our resolve held.
"The Avalon quickly arrived in the Bindaris system and discovered, much to our surprise, wreckage of transport ships and escape pods that were apparently trying to flee. Bindaris II itself was intact, though the surface had been incinerated by anti-proton beams and killed all life on the planet. Although the signatures appeared to be Undine, the fact that they didn't destroy Bindaris completely left us suspicious.
"We then detected a single intact shuttlecraft and our suspicions were quickly confirmed. It opened up a transdimensional rift and warships of the Terran Empire emerged. Using a tractor beam similar to that utilized by the Borg, they disabled the Avalon's systems and began towing us back to their universe. Our first attempt at escaping almost succeeded, however a larger Terran warship from within the rift engaged a much more powerful tractor beam. It partially emerged from the rift and its hull configuration looked like that of an Odyssey-class starship.
*a pause*
"Then we were hailed. The killer of 200,000 innocent lives was none other than...
*another pause*
"....myself."
((To be continued...))
*another long pause*
"As we were being towed into the alternate universe, I traded barbs with my counterpart, someone who fancied himself the next leader of the Terran Empire...
*leaves out the fact that his counterpart has a harem of Orion women, familiar ones at that*
"...and as our scans revealed, he needed the Avalon to pursue those ends. His ship was using a holoemitter; it was in fact the Sovereign-class I.S.S. Midway, the counterpart of my old ship. Mr. Fearos devised a way to break us free from the Midway's tractor beam and the Avalon engaged the Terrans with the help of ships from something called the Coalition, apparently a rebellion against the Empire. Boarding parties from the Midway were neutralized.
"The Midway, though, had one last surprise in store for us. They hit the Avalon with what appeared to be an anti-proton lance, causing heavy damage to the ship. The Coalition ships aided the Avalon back through the transdimensional rift and it was sealed on both ends using a neutrino beam. Scans indicate that doing so removed the possibility that the Terrans can penetrate into this universe from that star system again. After assistance from the U.S.S. Illiad the Avalon returned to Deep Space Nine under her own power.
*a pause punctuated by a sigh*
"Though my counterpart's attempts to steal the Avalon were thwarted, the Midway remains at large and thus the butcher of the Bindaris II colony has not been brought to justice. He'd better hope that our paths never cross again..."
*brief pause and quickly adds in a more upbeat tone*
"And note to the quartermaster, begin distributing the BUDF emblems to all personnel. We'll need them for next week..."
"Captain's Personal Log: Supplemental
"Archer had the Xindi and the Romulans. Kirk had the Klingons and Khan Noonien Singh. Picard and Janeway both had the Borg. Sisko had the Dominion and Gul Skrain Dukat. Do I have General Tomalar and...myself?
"In the week since the battle at Bindaris II, I've had a lot of time to study the history of interactions between the Federation and the Terran Empire. Kirk was the first to discover their universe and Sisko was the second captain to interact with them and yet neither squared off against their counterparts. Neither saw first hand what they were in that reality, what their lives would have become had the savagery of that universe shaped their destiny. And now I have and I suppose I am unique among all starship captains.
"I...he slaughtered 200,000 lives to draw my ship into a trap, to capture her in an attempt to use the Avalon as a means to seize control of the Terran Empire. If not for the intervention of Captains Seana, RasTalon, and Thelis of that universe, he would have succeeded. Avalon would be his and my crew would be slaves of the new empire he sought to forge.
"I suppose that's what has bothered me the most this past week, that had our positions been reversed, I may have become just like him. I would have committed genocide just because, I would have kept a...harem just because I could. And yet, I know after all the soul searching I have done since last week, I realize now that I am not him nor will I ever become like him. Because I would never do what he's done. I would never glass a planet, I would never treat women as mere sex slaves. I'm not a barbarian, I'm not a mere thug.
*he sighs bitterly*
"Yeah, well, all that moral high ground I'm standing on doesn't raise 200,00 from the dead. And he's still out there, likely trying to plot his revenge. The I.S.S. Midway will never be up to snuff with the Avalon, but I doubt that'll stop him from trying again. Because I know if I was anything like him, I wouldn't. He won't stop until he or his son sits on the Terran throne..."
*a pause*
"His son. I cannot help but wonder if that child's anything like my son. He was clearly involved with Kalera, Jaroda, or any number of that universe's equivalents to the Orions I know...and thensome. No, I doubt his child is at all like Darren. My son, despite being two days shy of being four months old, is very curious and affectionate, wanting to explore his surroundings and smile at and hug everything in sight. He reminds me so much of Kal that it's...
*His expression turns grim*
"If my counterpart resurfaces, he may come after me directly or after those I love. I know he was referring to Liani during our back and forth; how he knew I'm involved with her, I don't know. She's a target now and perhaps so too is Darren. They used to say the price of freedom is eternal vigilance; they probably said that without having met their vengeance-minded Terran counterparts...
"...oh, and if given the chance, I should speak with Vanora about these events. Maybe she knows something about that other Jason Hunter I can use to protect those I care about..."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88426.2
"With nothing that presently requires the attention of the Avalon, we are maintaining our standard picket duty around Deep Space Nine and the Bajoran system. As per the request of Captain Tiana RasTalon of the Exodus, we will be standing by to assist her ship should they make a return trip to Bindaris II to look for survivors.
"Additionally in accordance with Starfleet regulations, we will be conducting crew evaluations this week. I will be taking each of my senior officer's appraisals and recommendations very seriously. The Avalon is a fleet flagship and, arguably, one of the best ships in Starfleet. Only the best should get the chance to serve on her..."

"Today's patrol went without incident save for the sudden appearance of a Caitian Stalker-class fighter whose pilot, one Nine of Twelve, requested the Avalon's assistance in studying the collision of a Tarsis energy wave and a nebula. We complied and completed our patrol.
"Crew evaluations are ongoing and we remain ready to assist the Exodus if she needs to return to Bindaris II or Deep Space Nine should the situation with former admiral Xander Serat warrants the involvement of the BUDF's flagship..."
"Captain's Log: Supplemental
"The Avalon participated in a series of impromptu war games with other ships in the Beta Urasae Defense Force. The competition was fierce, but the BUDF's flagship proves her mettle by scoring the most kills, dishing out the most damage, and shrugging off the best that her sister ships had to offer. Never fails; whenever Avalon gets kicked in the teeth by an enemy, she returns to the fray with upgrades that continually make her the best damn ship in Starfleet. I am very proud of my ship and my crew and very proud of the fact that both are the envy of all of dares try to take her on in a fight, both simulated and real.
"Furthermore, I have been informed that the Avalon will be needed as an escort for the Exodus during her follow-up mission to Bindaris II. While I highly doubt that we will encounter the I.S.S. Midway, there is no sense in taking chances. The Terrans have demonstrated their craftiness for setting traps and if my counterpart placed one prior to his defeat, it makes sense that the Exodus would call upon the Avalon for support. Captain RasTalon has that much going for her..."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88435.4
"As the Avalon stands ready to escort the Exodus back to Bidnaris II, we have hit a rather major snag. Lieutenant Commander James Davis, on temporary assignment to the Avaon, is now the target of investigation by Starfleet Command, namely Captain Jacen Sharpe of the JAG Corps. Davis' order to be restricted to DS9 couldn't come at a worse time. With Lieutenant Pallra Sarish still on her honeymoon, the Avalon needs the best people possible to run her security and tactical departments.
"Even though at present I can't do anything to get Mr. Davis transferred over to the custody of the Avalon's security department, I nonetheless intend to file a protest with Admiral Spoon and the highers up at Starfleet Headquarters. Interfering with the normal operations of the Avalon ahead of this mission is the worst possible thing to do and I will not allow some desk jockey to endanger this ship just because he has a stick up his...strike that, just because he can. There's a lot at stake here, more than I can disclose in this log. I just hope that this...bullshit doesn't put lives in danger..."

Deep Space Nine eventually confirmed that the real San Jose was in orbit of Risa at the time and since in all likelihood the imposter wasn't expecting the Avalon to be present fled. After recovering the ground teams , the Exodus proceeded back to DS9 under the escort of the Excalibur while the Avalon pursued the intruder vessel. A battle ensued and the Avalon bested the target handily...

Hopefully this second bloody nose will convince the Terran Empire to give both the Avalon and the Bindaris system a wide berth..."

"I am scheduled to depart the Avalon tomorrow for Cardassia Prime where I am to be awarded the Friend of the Cardassian Union Medal to commemorate my saving their convoy from General Tomalar's fleet. It is a high honor; the first recipient was Grand Nagus Rom and my award is to be presented by Castellan Natima Lang herself.
"I should return to the Avalon before her next assignment but if I am late, I am confident that she's in good hands with Commander Edwards."
"Captain's Personal Log: Stardate 88443.3
"I have finally arrived at Cardassia Prime. The Groumall-class transport that ferried me here certainly is a tad bit slower than the Avalon. During this whole trip I have found myself reflecting upon my father's war experiences, both against the Cardassians solely when he was a junior officer and during the Dominion War when he was captain of the U.S.S. Agincourt. So much change has happened to these people in the 60 plus years since my father first took up arms against them. Here's hoping that tomorrow's ceremony will be yet another step in normalizing relations between our two peoples and not another of the repeated steps backwards we've been suffering of late..."
"Captain's Personal Log: Stardate 88446.1
"With the ceremonies completed on Cardassia Prime, I am now presently on course back to Federation space aboard the same, somewhat sluggish Cardassian transport. The ceremony where I received the Friend of the Cardassian Union Medal was filled with the appropriate level of pomp and circumstances, speeches by both myself and various dignitaries of the Cardassian government.
"It was only after the ceremony that Castellan Natima Lang spoke with me one on one. She praised my efforts in trying to continue to normalize relations between our two peoples while at the same time airing a laundry list of grievances and requests of the Federation that fall well above my pay grade. A full accounting of our dialogue has been submitted to the FDC for review.
"After that, I had the honor of being given a private tour of the Hall of Sorrows, the memorial to all those Cardassians killed during the Dominion War. What struck me the most was that within those halls were merely names. There were no ranks, no indications of status, not even the slightest hint of how they died, be it in combat with the Federation and its allies or during the Dominion's attempted genocide of Cardassia Prime. To me, at least, the Hall of Sorrows seemed to serve as a warning against reestablishing the imperialist Cardassian Union, that after the last time it was attempted, the cost was too high..."
*He pauses as he pops he collar of his duty uniform, finding the standard temperature of Cardassian vessels to be too high for his tastes*
"Absent any secure communications through the Federation Embassy on Cardassia, I can only guess as to what the Avalon's next mission is. Hopefully if this transport can maintain her current speed, slow as it is, I can return to my ship and lead it on her next adventure..."

"On the bright side, I've secured sitters for Darren this weekend. Lieutenant Susi Kell on Saturday during Hromar and Kara's wedding and Varal and T'Pal on Sunday whilst Dad and myself go golfing on Father's Day. Some might question my sanity for turning my son over to his aunt and...other aunt for the latter while handing him off to a practical total stranger for the former day, but if it eases the burdens of my father and step-mother, so be it. I just hope that watching my son doesn't hinder Lieutenant Kell's duties on the Exodus; she seems to be a rather upright young woman and from what I've...overheard in Quark's, she and Temp...Admiral Aribriel seem to enjoy their post mission panties...parties, PARTIES
*A wee bit of a pause as he dispels any puerile fantasies of Susi and Tempest*
"On the other hand, I've agreed to take on one Carly Jacobs as a ward of the U.S.S. Avalon. Hopefully being under the disciplinary rules of a Federation starship will straighten her out. Carly has not had it as well as most. Perhaps being on the Avalon will give her the opportunity to turn her life around for good...
"Oh, and note to Commander Edwards: Miss Jacobs is to comport herself to all of Starfleet general orders and rules. That includes the uniform regulations; no knives and bare midriffs on my ship..."

*glances at his chrono*
"...in sooner than I think. Anywho, bachelor party, borderline disaster, date for wedding...wow..."
Jason Hunter, clad in only a partially open bathrobe, sat at his desk in his quarters aboard the Avalon. On the one hand the events of the past day had tired him out but on the other hand, he also felt exhilarated. And, unfortunately, a tad bit frustrated.
"Captain' Log, Stardate 88457.1," he said in a voice low enough so as not to disturb who was sleeping in his bedroom. "The wedding of Captain Hromar Williams and his wife Kara occurred earlier today. The ceremony itself went splendidly, however there was a major...disturbance during the reception."
Hunter sighed, unsure of how to exactly put this down into his log. "Due to my...relationship with DS9's science officer Lara Nix, Captain Tiana RasTalon of the Exodus, with whom I had a similar and brief association last year, appears to have suffered some sort of emotional or mental breakdown. I caught her ordering the remote probe of the Exodus' unshackled AI to run holo simulations of her ship's saucer section crashing into the Avalon's engineering hull to destroy her. When I confronted her and ordered Ex, as the AI is commonly referred to, to replay the simulation again, Ti...Captain RasTalon belayed my order and run a simulation of me getting hit by a phaser at full power..."
Hunter winced at that. This whole disaster clearly bothered him and not just because it cast a dark cloud over his best friend's wedding. After a pause, he added, "Once the Exodus' chief medical officer certified that she was mentally unfit for command, I exercised my authority as captain of the Beta Ursae Defense Force's flagship and had her relieved on those grounds. For whatever reason, this action caused Ex to shut down its probe and all systems on the Exodus save life support. The supply vessel was taken into a tractor beam by Deep Space 9 before it could drift into the Avalon.
"Obviously, this isn't the end of it," he continued. "The admiral in charge of the Exodus, Tempest Arbriel, will clearly weigh in on the matter, along with Captain RasTalon's father, Governor Rasi Korax of Jarkonis II. And while for the record I maintain that I acted within Starfleet regulations and the rules of precedence, BUDF commanding officer Admiral Kent Spoon could easily countermand me. The next few days will definitely be contentious. I envy Captain Williams being able to escape at a time like this..."
Hunter tapped the a button to stop recording. He got up from his desk and headed to his living room's window, reflecting on what happened. Did he feel that he was partially to blame for what happened? Of course; he certainly didn't help matters by becoming very amorous with Lara during the wedding reception in full view of Tiana. But it was Tiana who became unhinged; she was the one who threatened his ship and all aboard her, including his son, father, step-mother, and the person who now shared his bed and now was standing at the bedroom door.
"Coming back to bed, Jason?" Lara asked. With the lights dimmed, all Hunter could see was a faint outline of her very fit and very attractive body. Just as he couldn't during the wedding, Jason Hunter found it impossible to take his eyes off of her.
"I'm...not really tired," he replied. Of course, his saying he was tired back in DS9's Ops was what prompted their return to the Avalon and their...intimate interlude.
"Neither am I," she countered with a smile. He returned her grin and followed her back into the bedroom, not to return until the next day...

"Shhhhhhhhhh! Anyway, it seems the dispute between myself and Tiana has taken a legal twist. She's been arrested by Captain Sharpe of the JAG Corps for making threats against the Avalon and my life. I'll cooperate with the court martial as best I can, but...just wish it didn't have to come to this."
*Darren continues to repeat those two words over and over again*
"And yes, obviously, with all the bad that has happened, some good has come of it. Lara and I are in love..."
*A giddy chuckle with more outbursts from Darren*
"...and my little wingman certainly approves. She and I have known each other for a long time and...well, let's just say that we've had feelings for each other for about as long. Only recent events have allowed us to express and embrace those feelings openly. Maybe, just maybe, I've found the one. Maybe she and I are really meant to be together..."
*Darren starts getting fussy, which he tries to calm with a kiss on his forehead*
"Love you, little dude. And I love Lara, too, very much...."
*The door chime rings*
"Speak of the incredibly sexy devil. Come on, let's get you to bed so 'Papa' and 'Mama' can...shit, is this thing still on?"

"Our scientific mission was aborted due to unforeseen circumstances. Or perhaps foreseen circumstances. As was approached our destination, Q appeared on the bridge. Before I could interrogate him further, the Avalon suddenly lost all warp power and came to a dead stop. Science officer Seventeen of Twenty-Five was quick to provide an explanation...
*a pause, as if he's trying to wrap his head around the words he's about to utter*
"She claims to have received a transmission from herself...from the future, a transmission that I apparently ordered. If the Avalon were to have continued on her present course, it would have caused an unknown disaster that would have doomed the Alpha Quadrant. Had I not trusted Commander 25's word and if Q had not been there, I may have ignored that warning. Or maybe I did and don't remember because the timeline has been altered. Or...
"To hell with it. I absolutely, one hundred percent, hate temporal mechanics..."
"Captain's Personal Log: Stardate...er...88478 and change.
*a brief if somewhat melodramatic pause*
"I'm getting married.
*a happy laugh*
"Lara popped the question to me in Quark's earlier today. I was of course shocked; even though I had been pondering that idea for the last few days, she completely caught me off guard by asking for my hand in marriage. I know...in this day and age the old gender role stereotypes need not apply but...I certainly didn't imagine for one instant that she'd be the one to ask before I could.
"Oh, and of course I said yes. Us being husband and wife would be like a dream come true. And she wants to be a mother to Darren; that too is very important to me. The last few days the three of us spent together gave me a preview of what it'll be like for us to be a family. I can't wait for the day we swap I do's.
"Oh, and Hromar's already agreed to be best man. I just hope he doesn't seek...revenge for what went wrong at his bachelor party."
*In about as stark of a contrast to the above log entry as humanly possible*
"Captain's Personal Log, Stardate 88487.1. Recorded under security protocol Alpha 5.
"I...don't know how I even begin to approach this topic, or even if I should at all. Hell, for all I know, this log will be deleted the second I save it, but I feel have to say something about what just happened today.
"Twenty-one days ago, the Avalon monitored a Tarsis energy wave collide with a nebula, a detour from our standard patrol prompted by the mysterious appearance of a Caitian fighter piloted by a liberated Borg named Nine of Twelve. Astrometrics Officer Itachi tracked the source of the wave back to a recently collapsed star. Our first attempt to investigate it nearly ended in disaster, or so we've been led to believe.
"Then, today, we made our second attempt. Upon reaching the star, we monitored the brief appearance of a stealth vessel. All our attempts to learn of the ship's origin were thwarted...by our own computer. Didn't take much for me to figure out who the culprit was: my father.
*a pause*
"I should've known bringing him on board the Avalon would lead to something like this. We even ha a gentleman's agreement that he wouldn't be doing that on my ship, but he did, claiming all the while he in fact saved my ship and crew. Either way, he and his wife's time on the Avalon is now over.
"And the most infuriating thing of all? I lied to my own crew in order to put an end to this. They suspect the same truth as I do: that someone intentionally destroyed that star and the 'malfunctions' aboard the Avalon were attempts to cover it up. Maybe they'll believe me, maybe there was enough truth in what I told Commanders Edwards and 25 to temper their curiosity. This is something far bigger than they could possibly understand and prying into this affair cannot end well for either of them.
*lets out an ironic chuckle*
"Perhaps I did the same thing for my crew my father did to me; slam a door shut to protect them from the monsters behind it. And the ability to destroy a sun makes these monsters more dangerous than even the Borg. I tried putting in a call to Admiral Shull, but his adjutant told me he was busy. On the one hand, I want to track this down to wherever it'll go, but on the other hand...
*a pause*
"...f**k, maybe Dad is right after all. Computer, delete this log entry..."

"The new uniforms for the Avalon's crew arrived today; hopefully this can foster unity between us and the Exodus, as well as Lara and my hanging out with their senior command staff today at the Federation Day party.
"And in a similar and much more important note, Lara and I have agreed to take on Carly as our de facto daughter. She's lived a rough life and she needs stability, caring, and compassion, something I believe both myself and my fiance can give her.
"Hard to believe that at this time a few weeks ago, it was just me and Darren. Now it's me, him, Lara, and Carly. A family...who would have thought a guy like me would have...?"
*Pauses as he notices Lara's not as asleep as he previously thought. He shuts off the PADD and discards it with a hefty toss, what he proceeds to do with his fiance best left to one's imagination*
"Captain's Log: Supplemental
"I have concluded my debriefing with BUDF commanding officer Admiral Kent Spoon regarding our encounter with the Invictus fleet in the Gamma Quadrant, about how we successfully recovered Captain Conamar Be'jeric's ship and how the hostile Invictus vessels were most likely intercepted and destroyed by the Dominion. Battle damage repairs are ongoing and thanks to the evidence obtained from the Invictus Censura's computer core, Admiral Ivan Corain and his co-conspirators are likely to be convicted for genocide and violating the Prime Directive. For now, though...
*he pauses, glancing up from the desk in his quarter's to look at Lara, Carly, and Darren for a moment as they socialize on the couch*
"...I have more personal matters to attend to."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88517.09
"After the...incident yesterday, minor repairs to the Avalon are complete and we are ready to return to duty. Also, as per orders from the Beta Ursae Defense Force, the new uniforms for this ship are now being implemented."

"Someone's trying to kill my daughter. She and her friend Nikolai seem to think it's a Lethean named Nurnar, a former...business associate of Carly. Whoever it was almost succeeded; I almost watched our child die in my arms. Unfortunately, the only way to bait this assassin out is to use Carly as bait. As a father and a Starfleet officer, I cannot sanction it. I won't allow my daughter's life to be put in jeopardy again and I swore an oath when I put on this uniform to never, ever put a civilian's life in jeopardy.
"There has to be a way to do this...there has to..."
*recorded while Lara attempts to make dinner and while Carly attempts to play with her baby brother, Darren*
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88525.3
"The Tsidian blockade of Deep Space Nine continues and what's more, there may be another player in this looming conflict: the Zuthorians. Based on what little I could glean from Engineer's Mate Garrett Cortelia in sickbay earlier, he is, somehow, half-Tsidian and half-Zuthorian and that the Zuthorians are apparently mortal enemies of the Tsidians. It seems the problems of the Avalon and Beta Ursae Defense Force contine to multiply.
"Additionally, flight controller Mexis Xivix is relieved pending counseling. He appears to be going through his species version of adolescence just as his brother Arcen Xivix is. Based on my experiences with Arcen over the past year, Mexis' behavior bears careful watching.
"On a final note, Lieutenant Itachi Rin has been assigned as operations manager. If she demonstrates the excellence she has exhibited as chief of astrometrics, then I believe that the Avalon is in good hands..."

"Captain's Log: Stardate 88544.5
"At the request of Captain James Kurland of Deep Space 9, the Avalon proceeded to a planet in the Algira Sector to investigate the apparent disappearance of an archaeological team headed up by Dr. Paul Hoffman, Sr. Commander Edwards led an away team along with Colonel Tex Stratis' MACO team to the surface. While there, they encountered the force of the True Way while multiple True Way ships engaged the Avalon in orbit. The away team discovered that the archaeologists had stumbled across a True Way base and had been taken hostage; enemy forces both on the ground and in space were neutralized and the surviving scientists were saved, although sadly Dr. Hoffman's son, Paul Jr., had been killed during interrogation.
"The Avalon herself sustained moderate damage during the battle and First Officer Edwards was wounded. My highest compliments to him and Colonel Stratis' MACOs for a job well done. We've set a course for Beta Ursae Command's headquarters in the Lateri System, the nearest port of call, where we'll remain for the new few days undergoing repairs and transferring personnel and supplies to the new starbase...

"What with everything that's been...happening lately, I haven't had a chance to put the latest changes in my life into my log. Carly is now officially my daughter and Lara is my wife. Of course, this being something involving me, it didn't all go according to plan. The wedding was supposed to take place two days ago, however Lara developed a stomach virus and was too ill to attend. So, that ceremony became a celebration of my daughter becoming Carly Hunter and resulted in an...odd conversation with Governor Rasi Korax of Jarkonis II. The wedding was moved to the next day, however a battle with a wayward Cardassian cruiser delayed it an hour and the same bug that struck the bride also struck our daughter, making her unable to watch her parents get married. And then...
*a pause*
"Then came the part I dreaded the most, the part where the question of 'Does anyone have any objections to this union?' gets asked. Sure enough, as I dreaded but was nonetheless surprised, Tiana offered an objection. The objection was of course ignored and Lara and I became husband and wife. Then...Tiana got really drunk, but fortunately no harm was done. It ultimately was the perfect evening for my wife and I and now we're spending our honeymoon on a lovely...planet..."

"Oooooh, yes, right there Jason..."
"I love you so much, Lara..."
"I love you, too...uh, darling? Is that blinking light what I think it is?"
"What blinking...? Aw, hell, we must have bumped it; how long has that thing been recording?"

"While on routine patrol, the Avalon's chief engineer Lt. Commander Fearos failed to make his appointed rendezvous. After a brief investigation, we discovered his runabout adrift apparently ambushed by Nausicaans during his return trip from a xenotechnology conference. All attempts to track his apparent kidnappers have failed thus far; the attacking craft using the warp trail of another Nausicaan vessel to disguise their movements. Fearos' loss is not only a blow to crew morale, but to the security of the Federation, as well. His knowledge of the Avalon and her systems, most notably the advanced quantum slipstream drive, along with the technologies he encountered while serving as chief engineer of the U.S.S. Everest could easily be harnessed by our enemies.

"Captain's Log: Supplemental
"Following a brief excursion to Deep Space Nine aboard the Excalibur, we have a lead on where Commander Fearos may be held. According to information obtained from a Nausicaan familiar with mercenary circles, a Ferengi has contracted a Nausicaan clan with abducting attendees to the same xenotechnology conference concerning the Tholians like our chief engineer. The clan's base of operations is an old asteroid mine near the Bajoran system; Commander T'Kor will take the I.K.S. Paranor to reconnoiter the area before we consider our next move..."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88590.5
"We've received word from the Paranor that the mine where we believed Mr. Fearos was being held by the Nausicaans was abandoned, though with traces of Tholian weapons fire detected there. Commander T'Kor still believes the members of the Nausicaan clan are still in the area and is continuing his search. Unfortunately, if the trail runs cold again, our investigation will be at a standstill..."
"Captain's Log: Stardate 88594.01
"Following up on a new lead, the Excalibur carrying a crew from the Avalon and group of volunteers proceeded to Latarin IV in an attempt to rescue Chief Engineer Fearos. While we were unsuccessful in recovering our captive officer, we did discover that the Nausicaan clan was in fact contracted to seize Tholian weapons from the conference and weapons alone. Mr. Fearos was apparently abducted by a group of Ferasans intent on using his knowledge to make those weapons work. Excalibur has returned to the Avalon where hopefully this new information can finally lead us to Fearos..."
"Captain's Log: Final Entry
"Due to my actions at Jarkonis II, I have been relieved of command of the Avalon and demoted to the rank of lieutenant commander. I...don't admit any culpability or wrongdoing; I saw what I believed was a pending violation of the Prime Directive and I took steps to thwart it. We have no business being involved with that planet and I believed what Governor Korax asked of me and what Admiral Arbriel-Kell was about to do ran against Starfleet General Order #1. My only regret is that thanks to the actions of Commander Tiana RasTalon I was dragged into this...as my dad would call it, clusterfuck in the first place. Korax, RasTalon, Arbriel-Kell, and the entire damn population Jarkonis can rot in hell for all I care. All I care about now is my family.
"This is Lieutenant Commander Jason Hunter, signing off..."

Hopefully I can put the events of the past two weeks behind me and hope that my life is slowly going to return to some semblance of normalcy..."

"Ugh. Bad enough I'm being asked to set up the computers and comms at the embassy on New Romulus, but...to leave my pregnant wife behind on top of my obligations to the Tecumseh and her air group? Makes me think that J'rai had things easy in upgrading Starbase 146. At least he didn't have to deal with trying to make Federation and Romulan tech work with each other for the first time since the cloaking device was installed on the Defiant back in '71. We're being sent in ahead of the Avalon on Tuesday and I'm expected to make sure that the embassy's comms and computers are online and secure from Tal Shiar hacking before my future brother-in-law makes his grand entrance. Yeah, no tall order there; just better remember to stock up on bug repellant from the stories I've heard. Only bright side of this is that Carly's going to be on New Romulus around the time I am. She revealed a lot to me today, about who she is and who she chooses to love. And she seemed quite surprised to learn that I didn't question it. Life's taught me not to quibble over such things; in the past year, I met, fell in love with, and lost Darren's mother, even though every obstacle imaginable was thrown in my way with Kalera, up to and including her death in my arms. I would never impede my daughter seeking out what I had and lost and was very lucky to find again with Lara. Ever..."

"After 13 hours of work, I am pleased to report that the embassy on New Romulus has full subspace comms, computer networking, and internal security. No mean feat, but we got the job done. Only thing we didn't accomplish today was nail down tracts of red carpet for the embassy's new ambassador and for the command crew of the Avalon. While that'll be a simple job tomorrow, it can wait until then; I for one am tired. Still...there's something odd about this place, something familiar. Like I've seen the growing settlement here on New Romulus before and for the life of me can't place it. Oh well, back to the bachelor pad...er...Tecumseh until tomorrow morning, oh dark thirty as usual..."

"With preliminary work on the Federation embassy on New Romulus complete, the Tecumseh and the six other ships from the 146th Fleet will be returning to the starbase some time tomorrow. While I feel what we accomplished here is important, I for one am looking forward to going home..."

"I've assumed my new post at New Romulus' Federation embassy, however the trip was far more eventful than the arrival. While I was a passenger aboard the new USS Tiberius, the ship engaged Tholian forces at the Vault and I was called upon to lend Chief Engineer Varal Malfaire a hand in damage control. Although as action prone as her predecessor, the Tiberius is a good ship with a good crew. I for one am glad that they'll be watching things from orbit..."

"On top of trying to settle in to my new job here at the embassy, I'm also trying to adjust to the day/night cycle here on New Romulus. That is to say, there isn't any; the binary suns of this system ensure near-constant daylight at the main settlement. It makes one wonder how the Remans can possibly adapt to all this but thankfully my apartment at the embassy has, among other advantageous features, polarizing windows so that I can eke out some semblance of normal sleep during my time here. In any case, it was a productive first day. After repairing damage to the computer core of the embassy caused by an intruder that no one's shed any light on to me, I also repaired water damage to the transporter platform at the Atlai. Again, why would anyone set up a transporter in the middle of a river bed, least of all one swarming with nanov? I swear, one torrential downpour upstream and that entire area will be flooded. And then I won't be repairing minor moisture damage; I'll be replacing the whole damn thing because the pad, console, and buffer got swept out to sea. Only comfort I can take from this is that I ventured into the nest of the mother nanov, that which scares the living daylights out of Arcen..."

"My supply run back to Starbase 146 seems to have taken an interesting turn. While we were loading cargo for the phase one remodel of the embassy onto the shuttles bound for New Romulus, a red alert was sounded. While I wasn't privy to the exact details, all I know is that once the dust was settled, my wife Lara found herself in acting command of the starbase and me left to tend to our son. I really wish I knew what was going on, a luxury once afforded to me by bearing the rank of captain. Oh well; all I can do until things get back to normal is make sure Darren is okay and be there for Lara if and when they allow her to go off duty. Suddenly I now understand what I put her through when I was in command of the Avalon..."

"Chief of Operation's Log: Stardate 88922.6
"Today started off simple enough, getting near the end of the remodel at the embassy, spending six hours on my hands and knees personally setting tile in the ambassador's bathroom. Then I paid back Varal's favor and pitched in on the Tiberius. We ran into a Klingon ship asking for our help in hunting down renegade warships, though few on the crew were willing to take the offer at face value. But, T'Pal ended up agreeing and we ended up in a fire fight with with birds-of-prey. Var and I came up with a way to flush out the third ship, which was hiding under cloak, but was then quickly dispatched. All and all a productive day, though I hope I don't keep getting dragged into the action on Tiberius. They see way more combat than I ever did on the Avalon.
"Oh, and rumor has it we'll be getting an ambassador at the embassy, finally. Just hope he or she appreciates the work I've put in..."

"And if I had my way, one of my last. On top of the exhausting work to finish the remodel of the embassy's lobby, I was hit with two rather dramatic revelations. First, that Arcen after spending the last 80 years spying on the Federation for the Tal Shiar has defected to Mol'Rihan and is under their government's protection. And don't get me started on how he so callously dismissed Jayden, his own son. Then there's the reports that Ambassador Tempest Arbriel-Kell is due to be placed in charge of the embassy. If that's true, then hopefully I will soon be reassigned to the Tiberius. True, I'll be Varal's number two, but I'd rather serve her, T'Pal, and even Ivan. That's how much I want out of here right now..."

"Tiberius is certainly living up to her predecessor. This week, we got into it with the Hirogen and got out by the skin of our teeth. The result left us with a damaged ship and me with a severe concussion, both of which should be brought back up to proper health in a day or two. And note to self: I really need to sit Var and Pal down and make them watch 'Forbidden Planet.'"
"Chief of Operations Personal Log: Supplemental
"It's been two weeks since the embassy was declared fully operational, but our ambassador is nowhere to be found. And now I find myself stuck here in limbo, only able to interact with my wife and children via that holodeck winter event thing and unable to completely commit myself to the Tiberius. I've passed my transfer request further up the food chain in the FDC to Ambassador Stek, but I have yet to receive a reply. I just want to get out of here now, to leave before I'm made to serve someone I have zero respect for. And sadly, for the moment, that someone whom I so loathe is the only person who can cut me loose..."

"I don't know how I managed to wrangle it, but I've gotten a ride back to Starbase 146 in time for Darren's first birthday on Friday. To top that off, I'm hitching a lift on the California of all ships. She's putting in to 146's shipyard for a much-needed overhaul; she has about as many miles on her as any ship in active duty. I haven't been on board since I was made captain of the Midway, so it'll be good to see my old shipmates again. I just hope that Captain Mendez isn't...disappointed in me..."
"Acting Captain's Log: Lieutenant Commander Jason Hunter reporting...
"The California while responding to what appears to be a fake distress call was ambushed by a Nausicaan Garumba-class siege destroyer. During the attack, First Officer Tolkey and Second Officer Cox were killed outright with Captain Mendez succumbing to his wounds in sickbay. He was a good man and mentor, a friend and father figure to this ship's crew. As ranking officer aboard, I took command and destroyed our attacker. Our priority now is to restore warp power and limp the rest of the way to Starbase 146. With subspace communications destroyed, we're on our own in the event of a follow-up attack. Having served on this ship from a lowly ensign to first officer and knowing the example that the sorely missed Captain Mendez set, I know this crew can get all of us home..."

"Starfleet has awarded me command of the California, citing my familiarity with the ship and the lack of experienced command officers, though I suspect that I wasn't their first choice, given my record. Still, the California's not the Avalon; she's got about 60 plus years on the 146's flagship and time has relegated the Ambassador-class to serve as a support vessel, not a front-line cruiser. A ship's a ship, on the other hand, and this one's mine. I owe it to Captain Mendez's memory to keep her safe..."

And while I'm grateful this trip has allowed me to reunite with D'Llhran, Shull, Vanora, and meet a few others, I'd rather have my ship back in full working order rather than seek out components that are twice my age. My ship's such a lovely place, but...ah, damn you, Don Henley!"

"D'Llhran is dead, or so the reports from Starfleet indicate. How in the hell do they expect me to explain this to my son, whom in spite of his grandfather's many faults, loves him dearly? I'm reminded of my first experience with the concept of death, where my maternal grandmother dropped dead of a heart attack on a family vacation when I was four. Be it it the age of one or four, no child should learn of the harsh realities of this universe at so young an age, that those they care about most can be taken from us so quickly and harshly. I can still remember clinging to my Captain Picard action figure whilst my father and his brothers-in-law made the appropriate arrangements, of how uncontrollably I sobbed when I realized that death was a permanent state that cannot be undone. I feel as though I must in the days ahead must take it upon myself to shatter whatever illusions Darren has about life and introduce him to the reality of death when he has so recently celebrated his first year of existence. He's lost so much; his mother, his paternal grandmother. I had hoped to spare him from this kind of loss until I thought he was ready. Now, fate has forced me to awaken him to a world of tragedy and despair. I can only hope that he bears it better than I did when I was three years his senior..."

And I'm certainly not in a position to question his logic. Well, I could, but then I'd be scrubbing toilets on an automated dilithium ore barge instead of our posh embassy on New Romulus..."

"The California and ships of the 146th Auxiliary Fleet responded to the arrival of a derelict craft within Starbase 146's inner perimeter. There was one life sign aboard, locked in a stasis pod. It was beamed aboard the California and its occupant was revived in the transporter room. Scans indicated that this woman, who identified herself as Alicia, was genetically enhanced in a manner similar to the Augments led by Khan Noonien Singh during the Eugenics Wars of 20th Century Earth. According to historical records, the only Augments that survived the wars were Khan's followers who fled Earth aboard the S.S. Botany Bay and the embryos stored aboard Cold Station 12. However, Alicia seemed to be aware of Starfleet, an organization that did not exist during the 1990s. Unfortunately, she did not answer any questions beyond her name. For now, she is being treated in sickbay under the watchful eye of ship's security..."

So much has changed these last couple months and I'm told my road to recovery will take even longer. As much as I'd like to dive back into things aboard the California, I need to take my time and my family needs me. "First meeting of the principals involved with Operation Phoenix Flame occurred earlier tonight aboard the Victory and boy could it have gone better. I casually made mention of Starfleet's big Delta Quadrant expedition and groused and complained that ships like the California and those attached to the project wouldn't be assigned to something like Delta Rising and suddenly they all jumped down my throat! Me! Someone who used to command the Avalon; someone who probably like them took a stand against corrupt authority but because I'm Starfleet and not a civilian got busted in half because of it! I probably have more in common with a lot of them, but because I made one off the cuff remark, suddenly I'm just another stuffed shirt. A stuffed shirt who has no choice but to follow orders, because I'm Starfleet, not some captain for hire like Clarie's ex-husband or Salen. I go where I'm told and already I'm going to a place that I'd like to be as far from as possible.
"At least it's not the likes of Nimbus III or Jarkonis despite my earlier quips. Or surface thoughts. New Yukon's history dates back to the cold war with the Klingon Empire during the late 23rd Century. Based on my reading, it was one of many worlds settled under the terms of the Organian Treaty; free to develop by both sides but would have been awarded to the side that best developed it by third party arbitration if not for...hmmm, haven't read far enough ahead yet in the records. The starship Essex under the command of Captain Simon Price made a few stops there a century and a half ago. Maybe there's some insight into what things were like there in those records, assuming I can find enough time in the next week to go over them..."
