At over a thousand years of age, Aura is quite possibly the oldest sentient in Starfleet. Her species is the Tel'kun, native to the Delta Quadrant, albeit at the extreme edge of the galaxy. She only recently learned about where, exactly, it is.
She was found in the year 2259 by the U.S.S. Constitution during its first five-year mission, adrift in a deep space stasis pod. After being found and awakened, she was forced by circumstances to educate herself about how life in the then-23rd century was. Her homeworld, Astrana, is at approximately the Age of Sail and exploration, and the idea of a ship that traveled the stars was ludicrous to her at first. Culture shock was something she had to adjust to.
She spent approximately one hundred years on Vulcan, catching up on her education and adjusting to life in the Federation. Eventually, she signed up to Starfleet, both in hopes of contributing to the society that's given her so much, as well as finding where her homeworld is. As she was a soldier on Astrana, she joined the tactical track and has worked on many of the ground tactics in use by Starfleet today. These days, she serves the Academy as an instructor in ground combat, something Starfleet sorely needs after the rather dismal tactics and strategies used during the Dominion War and more recent war with the Klingons.
She's also responsible for finding the proper talent for various careers. Those who show great aptitude for combat on the ground, she recommends for the MACO training and is also one of those who send recruits to Task Force Omega, in the battles against the Borg.
