I just wanted to share a few things I've learned
over the years from PVP, I know many of you don't like PVP but it may
surprise you that a lot of this translates well over to PVE. Most of
what I'll be posting here is just general and not class specific tips
and can translate to ground and space as well as PVE.
Talk - Speak to the other people in the fleet, we have some very talented
players that would be happy to share thoughts and ideas.
Have Fun - If you're not enjoying yourself, take a break and move onto RP, missions,
the tailor (I could spend hours in there) don't turn PVP or the game for
that matter into a chore.
Practice - You're going to die... A LOT! Don't get discouraged and just keep
practicing. Don't switch things out between every match, start with a
set of abilities and gear and play with it over and over until you're
sure of what works and doesn't.
Your Terms - Never willingly engage in a battle unless it's on your terms, either
your abilities are done cycling, you outnumber the target, only engage
when you know you have the advantage. This doesn't always work but do
anything and everything you can to begin a fight on your terms.
Key Commands - Key binds for balancing your shields, F 1 - F 5 for targeting
yourself or team members, Tab for cycling through targets and
Alt/Ctrl/Shift + # to activate abilities in your tray can mean the
difference between damaging your target at the right time, healing a
friend or getting the hell out of there. I don't use my mouse in battles except to change my view (number pad is a must for this).
Your Build - Decide on what you want your ship/player to do, DPS, Healing, Support
are some basic examples and try to play to your strengths.
Abilities/Counters - Know your abilities, the shared cool downs and the counters for
negative effects. One ability I can't stress the importance of having (I
run with 2) is Tactical team. It diverts shield energy to the direction
you're receiving damage, boosts your DPS, counters some negative
effects and can be applied to other players or NPC's.
Boff/Doff- Research! Try and invest in BOff's with special space traits when you can, train up lvl III
abilities and find the perfect DOff to compliment your skill set/ship
build.
Consoles - Try not to use too many special consoles unless they can consistently improve your DPS
or defense, if you don't use the ability in every single encounter it
may be time to switch it out. Cool downs on items like Isometric charge, point defense, Theta
radiation can hamper your dps rather than enhance it.
Resists - Energy, Kinetic, Slow/Hold, use your engineering and science slots wisely, if
you can get armor or inertial dampeners in your build do it. If the
target can't damage you then you won't die.
Keep Moving - As you move your defenses increase, so having counters to
slow/hold/disables are invaluable! Another point is if the ship with
cannons can't get a shot they can't damage you. Hence the importance
inertial dampeners and counter abilities.
Focus Fire - Calling out targets and focusing fire can really take down the healer
or DPS dealers really quickly. Some players can easily tank 1 to 2
players but very few can take on a team of 5.
Consumables - Use them if you don't like playing with energy settings, just ensure you time them to work with the abilities you're using.
Energy settings - Playing with your energy settings can mean dealing that extra damage,
that hold lasting just a little longer or that heal repairing that much
more damage.
There is so much more that I could get into (accolades, weapon types,
maneuvering tips [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Scissors]) but I
think this is enough Spam for now. A lot about PVP or even PVE is
defending yourself, knowing your counters, being alert, working as a
team and then DPS. If you can't get the others working for you than it
doesn't matter how much DPS you have.
You're going to die... A Lot!. Really hope this helps some of you, have fun!
