It has come to the attention of the Pathfinders that our Starbase has become a boring place to RP. As one of our core casts, we are looking at ways to improve this, so that we can open it up to being an active and fun RP spot again. To resolve this issue we are doing the following things:
1.) Downgrading taxing defenses around the Starbase including the Tachyon Grid that surrounds a 5 light-year sphere of space... This was in place in the early days of the Starbase system to ICly prevent a string of near daily unannounced attacks on the Starbase from players. It has done it's job but is now hindering interesting RP with the Starbase when it is planned. Since we are now almost a Tier V Starbase, it is more than capable of going toe to toe with a hostile fleet... Perimeter defense will be replaced by Shuttle Craft Patrols (Peregrine Fighters and the U.S.S. Vindicated (Station's Defiant Class) most likely) as well as a few early warning sensor satellites (that are as reliable as the plot requires) and of course the numerous ships that make berth there. OOCly, @khaoskrow has volenteered to act as the GM for the Starbase and will be responsible for creating stories and co-coordinating with players who wish to involve the Starbase in an event..
2.) Effective immediately, we are wiping the current roster. It has come to the Pathfinder's attention that many of the players who hold department heads and roles on the Starbase are either victims of Alt-itis (guilty here) or are no longer active on STO. Players who held the departments and want them will be given priority consideration provided that the claim them by Midnight EST one week from today AND can demonstrate they will be active with that character (we should be able to say "Yes, I see you online often".). During this one week period, should a player who does not have priority for a role seek it, you may post for it on a first come first serve basis. We also encourage you to think about a department that you have fun in rather than a department head that is free... it's always nice to see two engineers or two medics discuss things.
3.) The rules we have established on weapons on the Starbase AND Port Authority are still in effect and this is not the forum to debate those rules. A note on Port Authority: If you are not apart of the Station Staff, while on the station, you are ALWAYS subordinate to station staff regardless of Rank. We can get nerdy about this and cite precedence and logic and reason, but let's not... it's been debated before. Your Vice Admiral pips are pretty... but if security officer Ensign Imma Grunt tells you you're under arrest for drunk and disorderly, you're under arrest.
The following positions are open and a description of the duties:
Executive Officer (XO): The Captain may give the orders, but the XO sees that they happen. He is the link between the rest of the Crew and the Captain and is usually the guy who will handle staffing issues such as finding a replacement for that role, duty rosters, promotions, and the like. When the Captain is not around, he is the guy who stands in.
Strategic Operations Officer (SOO): Unlike Starships, Stations do not have a Tactical Officer. The SOO takes up the major duties of weapons, targeting, munition storage, and combat operations. In addition, he will be the line to other ships assisting the station in times of attack AND the intelligence officer, responsible with briefing the team on reports concerning station security.
Chief of Security (CoS): The "Police Chief" of the Starbase, the CoS is responsible for handling all internal security of the station and any disturbances to the station's duties. The office is responsible for making sure restricted decks are not penetrated, as well as enforcing the Laws of the Federation.
Chief Medical Officer (CMO): The doctor who is charged with the health and well being of anyone on the station. Has the unique power of medically relieving any officer from duty, including the Captain. Will also run autopsies and treat unknown diseases.
Chief Operations Officer (COO): The most visible job would be the control tower duties, managing incoming and outgoing Starships and all comms traffic directed at the station. Also in charge of internal sensors and is likely the first person to know anything is going on (he can see something's up with a system before the Engineers and Know if weapons have been fired before security). Also control's the transporters, thus access into the station and allocation of station resources including space and power.
Chief Engineer Officer (CEO): When things break, he fixes them... but on a Station with an active ship yard, sometimes it's not just the station. In charge of repairing all station hardware and software systems. Can also be tasked to build things, most of them specific for mission reasons.
Chief Science Officer (CSO): In charge of external comms as well as thinking up stuff to deal with the anomaly of the week. The Royal Smart person, who can identify anything and help the engineer and Operations Officers tech their way out of a jam.
Pilots: Well the Station itself doesn't vary course often, pilots are still needed to fly the station's Runnabout compliment (fun fact: Ayche and I had a running gag that all our Runnabouts were named after Islands, similar to DS9's Runnabouts being rivers). In addition, with the new defenses we will be using, we'll need Peregrine fighter pilots. Could be a cool place for our Marine characters to work.
Department Deputies and staff:
Want to play a department but the head is taken? Don't settle for another one, play the one you want. Given the size of the station, it will be more fun to work with someone than have someone stand by themselves, useless, for an RP session. Besides, sometimes NOT being the guy in charge can be fun. Look at Lower Decks.
Note: Most of those still holding positions have been talked to. If I have forgotten, please let me know.
