Xiolani
Rank: Lieutanant Commander
Species: Reman
Birth: 2380, Rura Penthe
Passives: Efficient, Physical Strength, Telekinesis, and Telepathy.
Personal:
In the aftermath of Shinzon's coup and eventual defeat by the Enterprise E, Remans were afforded some efforts to pursue independence. One of those efforts was supported by the Klingon Empire, who declared Remus a protectorate for a time. Xiolani's parents were among a group of former miners and Dominion War veterans that sought the opportunity to emigrate to Klingon space, boarding a colony ship and heading for Qo'nos.
However, the protectorate did not last long amidst the changes in the Romulan power structure, and by the time their ship reached Omega Leonis, the Remans were no longer as welcome. As a consolation, the colony ship was allowed to land and settle on Rura Penthe, a planet extremely similar to Remus. Shortly thereafter, Xiolani was born.
Over the next few years, the Reman settlement appealed for assistance from the Klingon Empire, the Federation, and Unificationist movements on both Romulus and Vulcan. From the last group, they received an offer: some of their members, particularly the youths, would be welcomed to a Vulcan colony in the Regulus sector, as a projected first, small reunification effort. Xiolani and several other younger members of the colony were sent to the colony, where they were educated, largely in the Vulcan style. Xiolani was hardly the model student, frequently struggling to control both her telepathy and high spirtedness. Still, she took her academic efforts seriously and did well enough to earn approval from the elders of the colony to visit and study for a year on Vulcan.
Her time on Vulcan tested her endurance in multiple ways, not the least from the sun and heat. Some of her fellow students berated her for being less than a Vulcan, and a couple professors informed her more than once that she was nothing more than the subject of a social experiment. This created for Xiolani a sense of resentment for the culture that had essentially raised and taught her. She had almost resigned to give up before a chance encounter with a Starfleet officer. This officer inquired about her interests and her passions, and encouraged her to apply herself not to the sciences but to tactical studies at Starfleet Academy. She applied, even knowing that she might still be a showpiece or social experiment, but felt that she couldn't do worse except by returning to Rura Penthe or seeking the Reman colony on Crateris.
Starfleet Career:
Xiolani entered Starfleet Academy in 2397, where she had an above average but academic career studying starship tactical operations and security. Graduating in 2401, she received first a series of ground- or station-based security positions, finally landing at Deep Space Nine in 2409. In 2410, she applied for a starship position in the unusual Unit 4-7. She was accepted and assigned as tactical officer for the USS
Aegis. After the destruction of the Aegis, Xiolani was promoted to lieutenant commander and assigned the position of Strategic Operations Officer on Starbase 146.
Personality Profile:
Perhaps due to her upbringing as an outsider in Vulcan society, perhaps due to her telepathy, or a combination of both and some amount of predisposition, Xiolani could best be described as somewhat bi-polar. At times, she will relish her logical upbringing, acting to most observations as a Vulcan would: distant, stoic, coldly rational, and intelligent. At other times, she embraces a more chaotic nature, one of aggression and sarcasm. When in battle, she thrills in taking down her marks, and will do anything to keep herself and her crewmates alive. However, this chaos can lead to hesitation and lapses in judgment, as she mentally tries to calculate what she should do with what feels like the right thing to do.
She is highly aware that she is alone within the crowd of Starfleet, and accepts that she always will be an outsider. She suppresses her feelings from others and frequently isolates herself from her colleagues. Thus, she both appreciates and resents Federation society as she did Vulcan's. At low moments, she can respond rashly or harshly to criticism, or just as easily withdraw.
She has a moderate telepath rating, with a strong degree of skill in telekinesis. She is aware that while Betazoids are commonly accepted for their telepathic abilities, though she also knows that others are more leary of those who can read thoughts. She tries to limit use of her abilities to tactical situations. There are no reports of her abusing her gifts on others.
