This Task Force was created due to a difference in my style of role play. For those who do not know me, I am a Combat Vet from the Afghanistan war. I spent six years in the military and as such, I require order and set boundaries. Also, being military, and Star Trek being military based, I really dislike playing with twenty year old captains. Sure there are certain species with regards to maturity age. I can work with that, but come on, a guy right out of the academy a captain already? That isn’t even realistic or conceivable in this day in age. Even Data, who had computer intelligence had to spend the time to climb the ranks.
Experience is an important factor. It doesn’t matter how brilliant you are. Sure that has some influence. But the experience gained over the years of doing your job and seeing what actually works and what dose not is most important. This is better known as Professional development. Even today it is really hard to respect a kid who just came out of high school and here you are with ten or even twenty years of experience in the field that he just came into and says he is your boss because he knows more about it then you do. Though, this does happen between a high ranking NCO and a lieutenant. Still it applies.
So, I created SEARTT. An old name moved over from my old days in City of Heroes but still militarily based. Here, I control the ships in the actual fleet, what ranks are assigned to a character. Primarily in accordance to what would be expected with their age. I have ten characters and all of them have a story. Most of my characters are of the rank of Lt. Commander and below, I even have an ensign, Hell Richard was an ensign for a very long time, I had to promote him or he would be forced out of the service, as in the real military if you don’t get promoted after a certain amount of time, you are forced out.
I have only one admiral character, and that only happened because of old RP in the fleet way back in the day. Puma, my next highest ranking character has just taken a promotion to Captain. At the age of about 34 right now, this would put him young for this rank, but Caitians are considered mature adults at 12 Earth years. He has been in Starfleet since age 15. So this would put him at just about 19 years of service. Well with in the age bracket of making captain. I had him avoiding captain for the longest time, as I see no reason to play one. The amount of responsibility in such a rank is really something to be taken seriously and not something to flaunt around as a special reward.
I have put in so much detail that even the class of ship is heavily considered before being added to the line up. One thing I am trying to avoid is grabbing one of the newest shiny ships to come off the production line. Those are hard to come by and normally reserved for special things and officers. The older ships, like the sovereign, yes, that is an old ship at nearly 50 years old now for current game time, are plentiful. Each ship has an in depth registry number assigned to it. To make sure it stays unique while at the same time being able to tell what kind of ship it is, what career class the captain is, and what tier it is. It is all in the registry number by a pattern created from when the fleet used to be BUDF.
I also have created a uniform for the group as well and they all wear it. This is unity; this is what a uniform is after all. Many people like to have their own unique look for each of their characters. I prefer more of a uniform for all characters. This allows for people to immediately know which group you are apart of. I have gone with the new Star Fleet Uniform that recently came out, that all the NPC are wearing. The only difference you will see is that for my commanding officers of my ships is that instead of the white shoulders, you will see a white border around the section color across the chest. Every thing else is as close to the uniform as I can get.
What you will also find is that my characters will address others by their rank, as is military procedure instead of just a name. Of course they will go to a name when more familiarity is established or when the situation doesn’t require the formalities of rank and office. Most of my characters will even snap to attention when the situation arises as I am trying to stay military with my characters.
As it stands right now, SEARTT is attached to 146 and Spoon will take orders from that commanding admiral. This is to prevent a conflict in the chain of command. The officers in the task force are subject to the starbases regulations and procedures. Though at any time, if friction arises to the point that it becomes a blatant show of who is boss, I’ll just write the group out as leaving the starbase.
