First Officer's Log, Stardate 89053.63
This is the initial log entry of Commander Erika Hayasaki, first officer of the USS Exodus.
We are undertaking a first contact mission. A recently explored system on the edge of the Bajor sector, Zhao-220, has been determined to be home to at least one sentient species. The Exodus has been tasked with inital assessment and surveys, to determine futher measures to be taken, if any. I anticipate a smooth first mission aboard my new vessel.
First Officers Log, Supplemental
The initial approach to Zhao-220b was routine. Orbit was established, a planetary survey conducted, and we even observed an attempt at launching an unmanned orbital craft. Lt. DuFresne's survey determined that the local civilization had a achieved a relatively advanced level of Tier 4 technology. On my recommendation, Captain Rastalon decided to deploy an away team to perform close in observation of the native species. The Captain decided to lead the team herself, accompanied by myself, ships AI Pulsar, Chief Engineer t'Lhaitrha, Security Chief Syvian, and lieutenants DuFresne and Threm. At this point I failed to object to the composition of the away team, including as it did the captain and first, second, and third officers. Fortuneately, the ship was left under the command of the experienced Lt. Tucker.
Upon transport, our team began detailed scans of the area. The captain decided to proceed from the industrial area we had beamed into and make our way to a nearby administration building, evidently servicing the local space program. Lt. Threm was returned to the ship, as his unique appearance was out of place. Wearing appropriate local costume, we gained entry easily. I hacjked into the facility's computer network and, with Pulsar's aid, downloaded files containing relavant information on indigenous technology. We then tracked down a public use terminal, and accessed library archives on local culture and history.
At this point, we found ourselves in the middle of a local terrorist incident. A group of rebels or terrorists seized the building in a lightning assault, demanding the surrender of some local leader. Our team managed to avoid being rounded up with the other hostages, and was trapped when local security forces locked down the area. At this point Commander Syvian began to act irresponsibly. He repeated expressed a desire to engage the terrorist group, which was composed of genetically modified individuals, similar in nature to human augments. In addition, despite the captains orders to stand down and remain hidden, he continued making preparations for a firefight we were ill equipped to handle. I believe that had the situation changed, he may have started an engagement that would have involved a large number of locals, breaking the Prime Directive and causing unavoidable cultural contamination. The situation was defused, however, by Lt. Tucker's insistence on extracting our away team regardless of the state of the situation, and by the Captain and Lt. Tucker's improvised distraction that enabled us to beam out without attention from locals.
First Officer's Log, Supplemental
Having completed our mission, the Exodus is returning to Starbase 146. Commander Atreyu Syvian, as a result, has requested an extended leave of absence. Lt. Tucker will be assuming his role as chief of security, in addition to his duties as chief tactical officer.Concurrently, I am entering a special commendation in my mission report for Lt. Tucker, and recommending his promotion to lieutenant commander, both for time served in rank, as well as its relevance to his new responsibilities.
