So ive been playing the Atlanta in World of warships...when it hit me, Trek and STO wise...theres no fire support ship, you might think "Oh those would just be escorts" not EXACTLY...what i mean is like an Anti Aircraft vessel just like Atlanta was. Would she be an escort STO wise?...yes...but her MAIN purpose would to guard larger vessels from smaller craft like fighters and frigates...in a since shed just be one big auto defense turret with turrets and phasers arrays everywhere and maybe a few quantum torpedos. but like escorts dispite her raw firepower...she cant really take hits. Twas my idea just something that poped in my head really. *Shrugs*

Thunderchild and Akria class come with phaser and torpedo point defense consoles. I think that safely makes them the anti-small craft ships.

Yes, but given the mostly lack of small craft combined with the already established point defense weaponry, there really isn't a need for a dedicated AA or Aegis-type vessel. Unlike something like Star Wars, which shows space combat as being heavily reliant on fighters and bombers (which is why the Lancer-class frigate exist), Star Trek shows space combat as being predominantly large craft on large craft, more akin to Napoleonic-era naval warfare. However, in my opinion, if there were to be a dedicated AA type craft, it would more likely than not fall under an escort category.
