Do we have an agreed upon stardate that we use for in game stuff? Also, what's the in game year?

I can't tell you the stardate. Norc'd be better for that. As for year, I believe we run with 2415.

We do use 2415 for the year. Stardate itself is a bit trickier, but go into the fleet window, to News, there's a dropdown to switch between Stardate and Earth Date to get the day/month.

Okay, thanks. I'm going to start incorporating Stardates in my reports and whatnot.

I believe STO year was intended to be current year + 400, but Star Trek Online's ship date slipped a few months into 2010 after all the content was dated 2409. Which means the year should probably change in N+399 in February, and…
It's become a mess, especially since fleet consensus aside (and I'm not arguing that, because even though it's not great it's still the best possible answer) there's no way over five years have passed in terms of content generation.
Summary: Hooray! 2415.

...there's no way over five years have passed in terms of content generation. Summary: Hooray! 2415. And yet Cryptic expects us to believe every event and storyline they've made has happened in merely one year...which I find impossible to willingly suspend my disbelief of. Certainly five years is short, but as you mentioned, it's the best option available.

Makes keeping dates and events organized in ones head while calculating how long ago things took place in your character's history, etc.

I feel it should be noted, most other RP fleets use +400 as opposed to +399. I'm more inclined to use the former, but the only real issue is when it comes to synchronizing timelines. It can get a little messy.
From my experience, it seems the majority would prefer to use +400, but changing it at this point would take a lot of effort, despite any benefits of continuity with other groups.

Also a fan of +400 because it makes stuff way easier to check in a hurry. Especially when coordinating with TV episodes etc that might have had an impact on a character's bio, you just have one less chance to screw up.

Well, I'd prefer +400 as well.

When the game launched in 2010, the STO setting was 2409. We have a large number of stories and backgrounds that are based on this number, so changing it would require a large amount of revisions in character and fleet canon, so it's not currently being considered.

Norcaler used to use the Stardate Calculator at www.ditl.org/pagstardatecalc.php?ListID=Calculators for his logs. I've used it as well. There is a difference between that and the in game stardate, but it's consistent enough. If you remember that stardate was meant to be a relativistic time scale meant to account for travel at near light speed and beyond, you can get away with some variance between the site and the in-game date meter, and still feel like things happened in the order they did.
