"Captain's Log: Stardate 1147.2
"Launch day. After a year of overseeing the final phases of construction of the Midway, we're ready to take her out of spacedock and begin a shakedown cruise prior to the beginning of a five-year mission of exploration, diplomacy, and interstellar defense. The crew is eager to put the Midway through her paces and to start our journey..."

"Captain's Log: Stardate 1150.4
"Our launch from Earth today was delayed briefly due to the late delivery of the shuttlecraft Fletcher, but there was a second delay that was more troubling. Unbeknownst at the time, the Midway had been infiltrated by agents of an unknown power whose act of sabotage overloaded a sensor relay on Deck 3. While investigating the damage caused, Chief Engineer Ivanov was assaulted via what appears to be a Vulcan nerve pinch. Our launch countdown was frozen but after verifying no further sabotage and discovering the infiltrators had already left the ship, the Midway departed as ordered. Whoever these people were or what their aims were remains a mystery.
"We are proceeding on course for the Aldebaran Colony for brief shore leave and to collect remaining members of the crew, most notably our first officer. Afterwards, if the Enterprise's probe beyond the edge of the galaxy is successful, the Midway too will go where no man has gone before..."

"Captain's Log: Stardate 1247.9
"After departing the Aldebaran Colony with our full crew compliment, the Midway was intercepted by a cloud like formation that boarded the ship through an impulse vent. In short order, two members of the crew were rendered comatose, though mysteriously with smiles according to Dr. Wells. While attempting to corner the entity, First Officer T'Lal and Navigator Rey reported they were accosted by mysterious males of their respective species. The entity seemingly had the power to appear as individuals that its intended victims could only see or hear. T'Lal and Rey survived their encounter. And the two crewmen rendered unconscious were both male, suggesting that perhaps females could resist the entity.
"However, once we realized this, the entity began making its way up the main turboshaft to the bridge..."

"Captain's Log: Supplementary Entry
"The entity continued to move about the ship unimpeded, eventually entering auxiliary control and disabling the crewmen there. The entity appeared to be composed of lambda radiation; a type of energy that could be dissipated by ionic particles. Fortunately for us, there was a source of such particles in a nearby pulsar. We opened an intercraft channel, tying the circuit into the universal translator in an attempt to communicate with the entity. It communicated its intent to speak with me in my quarters. Upon ordering a course plotted to the pulsar and leaving standing orders with Science Officer T'Lor to head there should something go wrong, I left the bridge to confront the intruder.
"Fortunately, the entity chose to assume the form of Dorothy Rodgers, the alias of one of the intruders who boarded the Midway prior to launch. Considering what that unwanted guest did, I was able to resist this entity's advances and subtly opened a channel to the bridge so T'Lor could listen in on our conversation. I was able to learn from it that it feeds on emotion, preferably those like lust and love, a process that renders the victim comatose. Convinced that the entity couldn't be reasoned with, I was able to discreetly order T'Lor to proceed to the pulsar. Once sufficiently close to it, the entity departed the Midway.
"I've advised UESPA Command to issue a warning to all ships to avoid this area lest the entity finds more victims to feed upon. Commendations to Lieutenants Rey and McGann and special commendation to Lieutenat T'Lor in particular. Her actions saved the ship and saved me from ending up unconscious on my floor grinning like an idiot.
"I suppose I should also thank 'Dorothy.' If she hadn't done what she had done, I might not have spotted the entity's deception..."

"Captain's Log: Stardate 1382.6
"The Midway charted system NGC 87997, finding two gas giant planets, a Class-L planet, and a Class-M planet. After scans of the Class-L turned up nothing of interest, our survey of the Class-M discovered traces of dilithium, though interference prevented a positive identification as well as identification of possible sentient life forms. A&A Officer McGann, Navigator Rey, Chief Engineer Ivanov, and myself beamed to the surface to find that there was indeed dilthium there in vast quantities.
"When Ivanov attempted to retrieve a sample, all dilithium deposits in the vicinity began to glow, hinting that they were all part of the same crystalline structure. Lieutenant Rey, who was scouting around, was incapacitated by a tranquilizer dart from the natives, whose presence was clearly obscured by the interference from the deposits. The rest of the landing party during our search encountered them; a diminutive species whose civilization appeared to be at a stone age level. Their chieftain explained that we had harmed their life crystal, upsetting an entity known as Chechaka that they revered. After telling them that we have no further intention to harm the life crystal, they allowed us to retrieve Rey and gave us local furs and meat as a gift of friendship.
"I've advised UESPA Command that system NGC 87997 should be quarantined under the terms of the Prime Directive; while it is disappointing that we won't be able to mine the dilithium, it simply isn't ours to take. Perhaps some day we can come to arrangement with these...Chechakans. Perhaps in a couple thousand years or so..."

"Captain's Personal Log: Stardate 1411.3
"Hard to believe over a month's past into our five year mission aboard the Midway and aside from the intruders at Spacedock, the cloud creature that boarded us, and first contact with the Checkakans, it's been mostly uneventful. That part tends to get left off of United Earth Space Probe Agency recruiting brochures. All in all the crew's settled into things well; reports of other discoveries made by other UESPA starships trickle in from time to time, some more mundane and some more dangerous than ours.
"Our current orders involve continuing our survey of this sector, keeping an eye out for dilithium crystals and anything else that might crop up..."

"Captain's Personal Log: Supplemental Entry
"At least I hope this is still personal. On orders from Starbase 8, we intercepted a stolen shuttlecraft. On board, Colonel James Caldwall, head of the base's maintenance department allegedly in possession of classified documents that the base commander wanted destroyed. Upon analyzing the documents, I saw why the admiral wanted them gone. They were my logs, entries pertaining to our expedition to Chechaka altered to make it appear the natives attacked the landing party and we used lethal force to defend ourselves. The perfect pretext to annex the planet and mine the dilithium that Federation law protects under the Prime Directive.
"We were intercepted by the starship Excalibur under orders to retrieve Caldwall from us. Upon informing Captain Harris of our discovery and providing copies of both the forged logs and the actual entries, he promised to assist us in exposing this conspiracy. The Midway's now on course to Starbase 8 where my next task will be far more difficult than anything I've faced before in my career.
"The Federation and UESPA is better than this; that the exploitation of primitive, indigenous populations had been incinerated on the pyre of history centuries ago. The Chechakans are a peaceful race and mining their dilithium would be a crime; I promised them that we'd cause them no harm. Whoever is responsible for this has to be held accountable, but I'm going to be walking a dangerous line to make sure that happens..."

"Captain's Log: Stardate 1501.2
"While en route to Starbase 8, we intercepted a Code One distress signal; a series of explosions aboard the space station had crippled the base and we evacuated all personnel before the life support systems failed. The cause of the explosions is still unknown and it will be some time before the base can be rendered habitable again. The starships Constellation and Excalibur, along with the frigate Seeker, destroyer Melbourne, and science vessel Avalon are en route to assist and will arrive in ten days.
"...but perhaps most importantly, due to his actions regarding the Chechakans, I had no choice but to arrest Admiral Clancy, director of the United Earth Space Probe Agency, for violating the Prime Directive. A star officer's most solemn oath is that he will give his life, even his entire crew, rather than violate the Prime Directive and yet the admiral broke that oath in the name of the greater good of the Federation.
"Obviously this is going to have grand repercussions for the Federation. I've contacted Admiral Komack of Starfleet to apprise him of the situation and an emergency session of the Federation Council is being convened on the Babel planetoid. In all likelihood, ships, assets, and personnel of the UESPA will be folded under the auspices of Starfleet Command. I can only hope that being a part of Starfleet means continuing its mission of exploration alongside with being a peacekeeping and humanitarian armada as it was in the earliest days of the Federation..."

"Captain's Log: Stardate 1693.1
"The Midway arrived at planet M-157 in search of a new source of dilithium for the Federation. Instead, we found something...rather unusual. On the planet's surface was a dwelling; an accident within said dwelling resulted in the disappearance of A&A Officer McGann...when she was struck by a book, of all things. The dwelling's owner, Aitricus of a world called Dainny explained that these books acted as portals to other realms. The one that struck McGann led to a prison world of sorts where trespassers in the past had been banished. First Officer T'Lor entered the trap book in order to retrieve McGann and using a return book provided by Aitricus returned; the link back to M-157 severed on the other end. Upon their return, Aitricus and his curious library had vanished, perhaps through the pages of another tome.

"Captain's Log: Stardate 1709.8
"Responding to the attacks against Earth Outposts along the Neutral Zone that separate the planets Romulus and Remus from the rest of the galaxy, the USS Midway made a stop at Starbase 11 to pick up supplies for those outposts. While in transit to Outpost 14, an internal explosion crippled the ship, rendering almost every system inoperative. In those supplies we transported aboard, a saboteur, with the strength of ten men who easily overpowered myself and Lieutenant Donovan in auxiliary control.
"First Officer T'Lor wounded the intruder and upon seeing the attacker, we were astonished; though he looked human, he bled green blood from a gaping hole in his heart...right where the heart of a Vulcan would be. A Vulcan mind meld with the intruder revealed an even more shocking revelation: he was a Romulan. His people responsible for the attacks on our outposts, his job was to sabotage the Midway to prevent us from rendering assistance to the outposts and the starship Enterprise so that his people's new weapon, a vessel that can render itself invisible, would remain a secret. Unfortunately, he died in sickbay before any further information could be gleaned.
"I've sent coded messages to Starfleet Command advising them on the situation, though this may only be the beginning. Whether or not the Romulan attacks on our interests continue, the truth that the Romulans are biologically identical to Vulcans will have lasting repercussions for the Vulcan people and for the Federation as a whole. The Romulans ability to seemingly be one step ahead of the allies during the war and perhaps even the sabotage of Starbase 8 may both now have an explanation. And that explanation likely won't sit well with a lot of people.
"Repairs to the ship are ongoing and I expect to get underway shortly..."

"Captain's Log: Supplemental Entry
"Upon our arrival at the planet, we discovered signs that its society had regressed as much as three hundred years from when the Excalibur made first contact. A landing party consisting of myself, T'Lor, and Ensign Frederico beamed down to discover the entire civilization had been completely democratized via a computer apparently inspired by the ideals of the Federation expressed by the previous landing party. Votes on any matter could be called by any voter and instantly put to a global vote; the electoral process transformed into a quasi-religion in less than a year. Some might call this ideal, however our investigations found something far more sinister.
"On a hunch, we called for a vote on opening negotiations with the Federation. The computer chose to make this a vote between maintaining independence or giving up their vital resources for exploitation. This bias seems to have been instilled by the computer's creator, a native referred to by the computer as the Founder, who was allegedly inspired to do this by the Excalibur's crew. The computer appears to be a pawn of the Founder's interests and desires to remake his society as he sees fit. I can hardly believe a starship captain like Paul Harris could have directly inspired this change in their society.
"Unfortunately, absent such proof that the previous landing party was directly responsible for just how this society has transformed in the past year and with no immediate threat of loss of life to the planet or the Midway's crew, I had no choice but to return to the ship. Furthermore, considering how ingratiated this computerized voting system is, disabling it without a means to immediately replace it would cause severe harm to the planet's citizens.
"I've recommended to Starfleet Command to investigate the Excalibur's previous visit and to assign observers and specialists to see if there is a way we can reverse this without violating the Prime Directive of Non-Interference. I just hope Captain Harris doesn't mind, however if this was a decision made by the people albeit in favor of a clear liar and swindler, the Federation has no right to overtly interfere. Freedom of choice sadly involves the freedom to make the wrong choice..."

"Captain's Log: Supplemental
"Upon our arrival at Epsilon Delta 3, we received two signals, one from the planet and one from an orbiting space station. Mindful of reports of ships in the area experiencing malfunctions due to signals from this star system, Science Officer T'Lor and Chief Engineer Ivanov used a rather...unique method of determining that the harmful signal was from the space station. The signal from the planet was an advisory warning that the machines of that world had seized control of the space station and that perhaps the same fate would befall anyone else trying to make contact with them.
"In orbit of the planet was a Gorn vessel; the same species that recently destroyed the Earth outpost on planet Cestus III. Malfunctioning even worse than the other vessels, its crew abandoned ship via shuttlecraft and scuttled it to prevent their ship from leaving the system. We recovered the shuttle and discovered that the Gorn had rescued a Klingon officer whose ship had met a similar fate. Both the Klingon and Mr. Ivanov recommended that we destroy the space station to prevent the spread of the machines to the rest of the galaxy, however beyond their speculation and with no means of contacting the machines safely, I elected to depart the system.
"Quarantine buoys have been set up at the periphery of Epsilon Delta and I've advised Starfleet Command to declare the system off limits to all traffic. The Midway is presently on course for Vanguard Station to drop off our guests so that they can be transported back to their respective homelands. It's unfortunate that it is too dangerous to attempt contact with what could be a race of living machines, but perhaps some day it'll be safe for a starship to do so.
"And on a personal note, I find myself now hoping that Admiral Nogura doesn't rope me into Commodore Reyes' court martial at Vanguard. I hate legal dramas..."
